When Subaru announced the BRZ coupé would gain a performance variant, I got excited. BRZ tS would finally get the power it deserved. It might even get the much-awaited turbo, and power figures that befitted the looks.
I scanned the press release for tasty morsels with the eagerness of a teen at his first pub date.
The performance BRZ is called tS. Brz tS has STI-tuned front and rear dampers, gold-pistoned Brembo brake callipers all round, and bespoke dark grey alloys shod with 215/40 R18 Michelin Pilot 4 tyres. So far, so good, but still no signs of extra power.
The External styling includes front and rear tS badging, a red BRZ logo in the front headlights, and crystal black silica door mirrors and shark fin antenna. The tS upgrades will be hard to spot, and still no signs of a turbo.

ABOVE: 2024 Subaru BRZ tS
The BRZ tS cabin is trimmed in Bordeaux and black Ultrasuede, and has leather accents. The STI embossed front seats are set off by an STI red starer button, and an exclusive instrument panel with STI logo and Bordeaux highlights. And still, no hint of a power increase, damnit.
By now I was giddy with anticipation. The release went on to say: “Colours include: Crystal White Pearl, Ice Silver Metallic, Ignition Red, WR Blue Pearl, Sapphire Blue Pearl, Magnetite Grey Metallic, and Crystal Black Silica.” I was starting to become slightly downcast with no mention of delicious power figures.
Manual BRZ coupés now get Eyesight, Subaru’s safety system. It has Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Sway Warning, Lead Vehicle Start Alert, Pre-Collision Braking System, Pre-Collision Brake Assist and Brake Light Recognition.
Subaru boss, Blair Read, added: “The addition of EyeSight Driver Assist technology into manual transmission variants enhances the 2024 BRZ range. Not only does this offer more specification for customers, but also reaffirms Subaru’s continuous commitment to prioritising vehicle safety.”
No, it could not be.
I rescanned the release, desperately looking for the mention of increased power, a turbo, or some other indication that the tS was other than a regular BRZ with extra trim. There was none. BRZ’s performance model has different brakes, dampers, wheels and tyres, and a few changes inside, but that’s it. the performance model has everything except for more performance. Once again, BRZ coupé misses out on the one thing it really needs, more power. Gay Subaru owners will be utterly bereft. Gay Car Boys readers have been united in one thing, and probably only one thing: BRZ must have more power.
Subaru’s AWD WRX stands as the only real performance alternative with 202kw350Nm VS BRZ’s 174kw/250Nm. There are no further STI models on the horizon as Subaru edges further into the greener pastures of electrification.
All is not lost, despite the somewhat modest engine output, the flat-4 remains as sweet as a nut. BRZ retains the 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission options, and is as fun to drive as ever.
