Tesla send updates down the line frequently and this month there have been a couple of useful additions.

With many modern motors, tasty tidbits can bit tweaked while you have a coffee. Once downloaded, updates come via an embedded 4G SIM after which the owner can OK the changes. Once OK’d, the car is disabled for around 20-30 minutes.

This time, Tesla has given owners the ability to plan a trip on their mobile app. That’s handy for those roadtrips you all allegedly make. It will also show speed/red light/lane cameras on the route.

There are more cameras in the live view, and an automatic blind spot camera. (presumably the picture on the centre screen will be shaded red).

You can play games on the rear touch screen (if fitted), there are custom lock sounds, and more cameras in the live view on sentry mode. & camera angles will be available for use.

For those who can bother, there are Apple Podcasts, and Castle          Doombad on Tesla Arcade. Arcade also gets updates to other games such as Buggy, Polytopia, and Vampire Survivors.

Slightly handier are the automatic Emergency calling and high-def 3D representation of the surroundings while performing those tricky parks at close quarters.

The light show has been enhanced with the arrival of “The Arrival”.

ABOVE: 2024 Tesla Model 3 – Test Drive and Updates

New Model 3 “Highland”

Tesla doesn’t have the EV world to itself any more, and in an attempt to keep up with the brands making smarter cars, Tesla updated Model 3 by removing all stalks. Those ancillary functions are now buttons with haptic feedback.

I took a test drive with a couple of Model 3 owners who are contemplating the step up, or rather, across. For them, it is a financial gain resulting from an employer encouraging workers to be green. Their car is now a deduction, and buying a new Tesla Model 3 to replace their 2 ½ year old Model 3 saves around $200 a month. The driver liked the rear screen, but was ambivalent about the exterior changes to lights, and front end.

Although the cabin claims to be all new, the changes, which include ambient lighting, were subtle enough to go unnoticed. This gay twosome rarely have passengers travelling in the pov-pews so a rear screen is not important to them.

Finally, we noted a difference in the feel of the drive. The cabin was quieter, but the owner’s AWD 2021 Model 3 felt nippier than the RWD 2024 Model 3. Perhaps it was all in the mind. The extra range, at a theoretical 629km gives ICE brands a run for their money.

I do not care for the central driver display, nor do I like the stalk functions now being on buttons.

2024 Model 3 feels different for the sake of being different. The lack of a driver display on the windscreen, or directly in front of the steering wheel, continues to be an annoyance. Mini and Hyundai also have models where there are no proper instruments, relying on the centre stack instead. They too, come in for a severe talking too. For a brand that prides itself on safety and ergonomics, Tesla insists the looking to the right, and down low, is safe.

The have been changes to the infotainment system, but again, Tesla resisted the Apple CarPlay trend.

Finally, the owners have done several road trips in the Model 3, and reported no queues at chargers, nor did they encounter faulty units or misleading availably data. Each return road trip was 2,000km, and the Tesla ran faultlessly.
