She’s a beefy lass, but Polestar 4 is an unassuming beast of a thing that will smoke M’s, embarrass AMG’s, leave Audi S’s in its eco-dusted waste. Polestar 4 is also not quite perfect.
Here is my list of the top 10 things I love and hate:
1: phone charger – quick acceleration see the phone shoot out of the cradle
2: auto connect – refuses to reliably auto connect to CarPlay
3: mystery alerts – all the gongs sound the same, few visual indications
4: good ride/handling – firm ride and competent handling
5: 400kw/686Nm – good for a 0-100 sprint of 3.8 seconds
6: beats Model 3 – according to friends who are trading their model 3 for a Polestar 4
7: head up display – a cracking HUD includes all driving data including auto lane change
8: very quiet – most EVs are quiet but Polestar 4 is limo-like
9: OTA fixes steering – the auto steering functions all honing. OTA 4.2 fixes the problem
10: electronic mirror – easy to get used to but rear camera steamed up after rain

Even the mighty Polestar 4 has room for improvement. The auto lane change was inconsistent as were the other functions with auto steering.
The rearview camera displays an HD on the centre mirror, and is nothing new. There is no back window so it can’t afford to be obscured so we depend on it more than ever before. With the heavy reliance on cameras, it has become even more important to keep them clean. Obscured cameras could cause unintended consequences with stability and auto braking programmes. You get warnings before that ever becomes an issue but it does give the driver reason to be more careful.
We were surprised that the phone unceremoniously ejected itself from the Qi charger under stiff acceleration. It is by no means the only vehicle that does it, but is annoying none the less. Either make the shelf non-slip or put a lip at its rear edge. Either is a cheap fix.
The news is mainly good for those wanting to sign on the dotted line. Polestar 4 is roomy and elegant, and better than Model 3 in every way. Although Polestar 4 drives like a princess much of the time, she quickly transforms into Madame Lash for a thrilling experience equal to none.
The 100kwh battery is huge by industry standards and range should increase as updates make the big Swede more efficient. Charging speeds can also increase as updates allow, but drivers must remember that there are no cheaper EV options. Polestar can’t afford to rest on its laurels. and it seems it has no intention of doing so.
European and Japanese brands have been slow to take up the EV mantle so most of the competition will come from Chinese car makers.
Geely, Polestar’s owner, is planning an expansion and at least in the short term, can afford to carry Volvo and Polestar into the future, whatever that future holds. Chinese brands are now popping up like Whack-a-moles on speed. Where once Chinese cars were a joke, they’ve leapt multiple generations, in many cases overtaking the legacy brands. The automotive landscape is being reshaped as it has never been molded before, and although we know where it all started, we cannot know where it ends. Nissan and Honda are joining forces, VW is in trouble and Stellantis has a lot of dead wood in its showrooms.
One thing is certain, many familiar brands are set to vanish into the mists of time.
