70mai A900 Review, Dual 4K and a 4G Kit for About $300

Both cameras record in 4K, and with 70mai’s 4G parking (4g plan required) kit the whole set comes to $300 plus some change. We think the 70mai A900 is jolly good value.

Ryan fitted the 70mai A900 dual 4K dash cam to a 2019 Kia Cerato himself, as he is far bednier than I. Only the front and rear cameras are in so far, with no parking kit as yet. On 70mai’s Amazon shop, the A900 is $219.99 and the UP04 4G kit is $84.99, so the pair costs $304.98. 70mai quotes their Amazon shop prices because dash cams are a fiercely competitive market, and makers keep reviewing prices and adding aggressive discounts. Like the auto industry, China is absolutely smashing the competition through flexible pricing and rigorous competition.

Both 70mai’s UP04 and UP11 4G kits fit the A900. We were sent the UP11, but only the UP04 is currently on sale.

What’s in the 70mai A900 box

  • Power cord and manual for each camera
  • Plastic trim tool for pushing cables under the trim
  • Adhesive cable clips
  • Data cable
  • 64GB microSD card
  • Spare adhesive pads
  • Alcohol wipes for cleaning the glass

We liked the 4 electrostatic sheets. They go on the windscreen first and the mount sticks to them, so the adhesive schmutz never touches the glass and leaves no nasty residue when it inevitably comes off. We thought that was pretty smart, though we still prefer a suction mount to adhesive pads. before you say “suction cups come off”, yes they do. But, those 3M sticky pads turn to jelly in Australian summers, so you choose.

  • Screen on the back of the front unit
  • microSD slot and power button on one side
  • 2 USB-C ports, AV-IN for the rear camera and DC-IN for power on the other
  • Twisting rear camera mount, so you can aim it after it’s stuck in place

Fitting the cameras is a piece of you know what. Ryan origamied himself into the front, ran the front power cable up into the headlining and along it, then down the pillar trim to finish under the glove box and over to the 12V. The rear cable goes under the seat and the door trims, then up to the top of the rear window. One of the cable clips let go and had to be stuck back on. Keep in mind you run them wherever you feel comfortable, but never, ever, in front of an airbag.

Clear footage whatever the light

The 4K footage is brilliant in most light. Footage from both ends was clear by day, at night and at twilight, and the light made very little difference, which surprised us.

The on-screen menu and the 70mai app are both easy to use. You can pull clips off over WiFi or plug the camera into a computer, and taking out the SD card works too. A direct connection is always going to be faster. The gongs, the alert chimes, need turning off.

NOTE: Please forgive our dirty car windows, a canny viewer is bound to pick them up.

Emergency recording with a hair trigger

After 2 or 3 days of use the G-sensor emergency recording was setting itself off 3 or 4 times on every drive to work. Each time the cause was a little bump in the road. We’ll probably turn it off, and otherwise the A900 has been really solid.

NOTE: GayCarBoys recommends leaving this feature on to prevent the loss of important clips to overwriting or corruption.

Why the 70mai A900 needs the 4G kit

Parking mode on the 70mai A900 doesn’t work at all without a hardwire kit, so the kit is how you get protection while the car is parked. The UP04 draws power from the car battery to keep the camera watching, and the G-sensor starts recording when something bumps the car. All hardwire kits protect the 12V from going flat.

  • Alerts to your phone through the 70mai app the moment something happens
  • Live view of the cameras from anywhere
  • GPS location of the car, with walking directions back to it
  • Live tracking of a drive, location updating every 15 seconds, limited to 15 activations a month
  • Battery voltage monitoring
  • Cloud storage

The SIM comes with the kit and has its own tray and must have a 4G plan. As for 70mai features, there’s a free plan, with 30 minutes of live view a day, 15 GPS checks a month and 7 days of cloud storage, and paid plans above it if you want more. They start at US$2.99 a month and we think are well worth a look.

The 4G kit wires into the car’s power, and we find that daunting to try to attack ourselves. We’d get it fitted by someone who knows what they’re doing. We haven’t fitted or tested it yet, so there’s no verdict on how it performs.

Neither 70mai A900 camera uses a Sony STARVIS sensor. For that you take a step up to the A900 Ultra, and we want to test the 2 against each other to see how much difference the sensor makes. The A900 records true 4K at both ends, where the A810 Lite‘s rear camera was 1080p, and costs about half the price of the Redtiger F77. The F77 does include its hardwire kit in the box.
