Polestar 4 brings with it a carbon footprint so low that you need you need a microscope to see it. For years there have been those denying climate change is a thing, and accuse any entity trying to fight it, of greenwashing.
Carmakers have been placing themselves to take advantage the coming tsunami of electrified technology that will power our lives and transport people and goods.
After Volvo was sold to Geely, Geely spun off Volvo’s performance arm as its own, charmingly laser-focused brand, and that brand is Polestar. Volvo and Polestar have meticulously tracked emissions of their operations and the vehicles they produce, becoming more and determined to renew, reuse, recycle, and reclaim.
To that end, Polestar published the first Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for Polestar 4. It has the lowest carbon footprint of any Polestar cars to date, 19.4 tonnes of CO2e at launch.

Polestar 4 is made in Geely’s Hangzhou Bay factory in China. The factory combines truly green energy, carrying a I-REC hydro power certificate, with the plant’s rooftop photovoltaic electricity. They use of low-carbon aluminium from hydro-powered smelters whose data was included in the assessment for the first time.
For the time being, Polestar 4 Standard range Single motor will only be sold in China. The Long range Single motor’s carbon footprint is 19.9 tCO2e, and the Long range Dual motor is 21.4 tCO2e. Aluminium constitutes around 23-24% of the carbon footprint, with steel and iron making up a further 20%. As expected, the battery’s 36-40% share of the carbon footprint is the largest.
Fredrika Klarén, Head of Sustainability at Polestar, says: “To support our net zero goal, we set carbon budgets for all our cars. Throughout the product development of Polestar 4, its carbon budget has influenced everything from material choices to factory energy sources. Sharing the LCA enables us to show that we can strive for net zero – one tonne of CO2e at a time.”
Polestar publishes full details of the carbon footprint of all its models, and has done since 2020. All aspects of the car’s life cycle are considered, from supply to manufacture and recycling. The resulting figures summarise the climate impact in one easily report. It gives buyers the tools they need to make quick and educated decisions when buying a car. The LCA figures stated in this release disclose the cars’ cradle-to-gate carbon footprint which includes material acquisition through the production of the product and excludes the use and end-of-life stages.
