Audi RS Laps 3 Fastest Times in Class at Nürburgring Nordschleife

Audi’s RS 3 lapped a respectable 7:40.748 minutes, with Audi Development Driver, Frank Stippler, beating the standing record by 4.64 seconds.

“I’m proud of the whole team. Everyone worked hard for this day,” said Audi RS 3 Technical Project Leader Marvin Schwätter when the record time appeared on the board. “When we started development, we didn’t know just how quickly our compact sportscar would really be on the Nordschleife,” he explained. “But over the course of endurance testing, we determined that we could reach very good times and set a new record.”

ABOVE: Frank Stippler’s Audi RS 3 Record Attempt

The record attempt was run on Pirelli P Zero “Trofeo” semi-slicks. The only adjustments the RS 3 needed on the day, was an small tyre pressure check.

Audi’s torque splitter is claimed to have been instrumental in the result. It controls to rear wheels via a multiple disc clutch on each driveshaft. This allows more torque to the outer wheel during a turn.

The RS, running the factory optional tyres, had 19” ceramic brakes up front and active sport suspension. RS mode has two settings, one for “comfort” on rougher tracks like Nordschleife, and a second for smoother surfaces like the less famous Hockenheimring, a  track in the Rhine Valley near Hockenheim.

The 5-cylinder engine has the segment’s highest top speed of 290kph, and a best-in-class 0-100 of 3.8 seconds.

The modes allow quick times whether in professional hands, or those of less experienced drivers, but either way is a thing to behold. RS doesn’t have the shorty presence of the big Audi V8’s, but performance in seconds measures favourably with the smaller 8-pot models.

Audi has come far with its Vorsprung durch Technik motto, which translates to Advancement through Technology. The slogan was coined by Sir John Hegarty 30 years ago after seeing it in an Audi factory, and taking it global as Audi’s trademarked slogan.
