Chery Australia is gearing up to launch its first all-electric vehicle, the Omoda E5, and it’s shaping up to be a pivotal addition to their lineup. This EV comes in two versions, the BX and EX, both offering a good mix of style and tech for what will no doubt be an unmatched price for the size.
Powering the Omoda E5 is a 150kW/340Nm single electric motor good for a 0 to 100 km/h of 7.6 seconds. The range is up to 430 km on a full charge (WLTP), and can be charged from 30% to 80% in under 30 minutes with a DC fast charger.
Even the entry-level BX has dual 12.3-inch screens for instrument cluster and infotainment, 18-inch alloy wheels, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and very fast a 50W wireless phone charger. It’s stuffed with safety tech too, including 18 advanced driver aids, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assistance.
The cabin is replete with fabric seats with synthetic leather bolsters and a 6-speaker Sony sound system.

EX offers owners tasty touches like a power tailgate, an 8-speaker Sony sound system, ambient interior lighting, and black synthetic leather seats. The latter, once banished as tat, is now commonplace in the auto world as a kind-to-cows consideration. Unexpected extras included a 360-degree camera, heated seats in the front and back, and a powered sunroof.
Both models have Chery’s intelligent voice command system, allowing occupants to fettle radio stations and climate control without drivers taking hands off the wheel.
Omoda E5 is awash with convenience features, but it is safety that is most important when it counts. There are 7 airbags as part of a comprehensive suite of active safety features that are now expected as standard.
Despite claims to the contrary, EV batteries are durable and reliable with EVs far less likely to suffer a fire than their ICE siblings. To ensure function into the future, the battery has an 8-year/unlimited kilometre warranty. There is 7-years/unlimited kilometre warranty, capped price servicing, and roadside assistance.
Omoda E5 stands has a distinctive grille, 18-inch alloy wheels, twin rear spoilers, and LED lights. It comes in five exterior colours, with options for a black roof depending on model.
The Omoda E5 arrives in September, sitting happily alongside the rest of Chery’s lineup. Pricing details will be announced soon, but you can pre-order now on Chery’s website.
