Chery Omoda E5 EV to Start at $42,990. Details here

Chery Australia is set to launch their first all-electric vehicle, the Omoda E5.

This latest addition to the Omoda family signals Chery’s aggressive strategy to take the Australian market and give it a kick in the bum. Though Chery claims the move as a step towards a more sustainable, electric future, it is really just a middle finger to established car brands. Even the tiny Fiat 500e starting at $52,000 has half the range, slower, smaller, and takes longer to charge. Likewise Nissan Leaf which which starts at $50,990, so Omoda E5 shows that owning an EV is well within the means of an average person.

Many say price and range have been a major barrier in the choice not to switch to EV. Chery has positioned Omoda E5 to balance performance, tech, and affordability.

Omoda E5 has a 150kW/340Nm front mounted electric motor, with around 430km (WLTP) of range and DC fast charging from 30 to 80% in less than half an hour. That might seem modest, but set against the price will challenge the Japanese and Korean brands especially.

Chery’s gone all-in on keeping things simple and affordable, with two versions of the Omoda E5. The BX is $42,990, and the EX at $45,990.

Entry-level BX has dual 12.3-inch screens for instrument cluster and infotainment, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a 50W wireless phone charger. The EX adds a powered sunroof, multi-colour ambient lighting, and a Sony sound system with up to 8 speakers.

Omoda E5 has a decent 0-100km/h of 7.6 seconds, a modest consumption of 155Wh/km and a petite towing capacity of 750kg. The low towing ability won’t be noticed by most who will simply have a little man come with a bin instead.

Omoda E5 offline navigation allows the EV to go further afield.

The exterior

Omoda E5 is based on the same design as the ICE Omoda 5, but has a few electric-specific tweaks. The front grille houses the CCS2 charging port, and you get stylish twin rear spoilers (one on the roof, one on the bootlid) for a sportier look. The 18-inch alloy wheels are unique to the E5, LED head and tail lights, and daytime running lights (DRLs).

Chery’s offers Omoda E5 in five colours including Titan Green, Lunar White, and Martian Red, with the option for a black roof on select models to tickle your decorating fancy.

Chery has a 7-year/unlimited kilometre warranty, 7-year capped price servicing, and 7 years of roadside assistance, with the battery covered for 8 years.

The Omoda E5 arrives in showrooms this month, joining Chery’s ever growing lineup which includes the petrol-powered Omoda 5, the TIGGO 7 Pro, and the TIGGO 8 Pro Max.

Conclusion:

Chinese car makers had a wobbly start in the Australian market. Early offerings were cheaply made, awful to drive, and shook apart, rusted, and were a misery to own. None of them remain on the roads and many of us were sceptical when Chinese brands made a reappearance, but how many people know that Chinese brands include MG, Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus? These brand names were purchased for both their heritage and technology which seems to have paid off. The Chinese auto industry has boomed and will easily overtake Japan, the US and Europe who all seem to have seriously misjudged the new comers.

Chery is slowly taking root alongside its Chinese cousins and if EVs can be made for this price, established brands will be scrambling to keep their places in the market. MG is already in the Top Ten and is not beyond imagining for other Chinese brands to follow. BYD is making a dent in tesla’s EV sales and there is no doubt Chery add to Tesla’s woes.

Chery is a brand to watch.
