Sydney and surrounds are being pounded like cheap cuts of meat yet again. For the 4th time this year, a low has settled in for the duration and is giving many areas more rain in a day than they’d have in a month.

Gone are the droughts and fires of a few years ago, and so far, we have had 3 x one-ine-100-year floods in 5 months. The unprecedented situation begs the climate change question, but let’s leave that for another time.

ABOVE: Don’t drive into flood water

Here are some common-sense suggestions to help during poor weather:

  • Stay home unless you must go out
  • Check road reports to make sure roads on your route aren’t flooded
  • Do not drive through flood water (as the road under it my no longer be there)
  • Watch out for shallow pools when driving at speed
  • Drive for the conditions (slow down)
  • Make sure your tyres have plenty of tread
  • Beware of debris, pot holes, and other impediments
  • Keep your mobile charged
  • Have the number of roadside assistance, but be prepared to wait

It may seem silly but once the ground is saturated, even the oldest of trees may become unstable. One drive in the next street had his car crushed as an old tree slowly gave way.

Another thing to consider is that although you might be driving carefully, others may be less prepared.

The best advice is to stay at home, warm and safe.
