Many people haven’t even heard of Polestar, once part of Volvo. The Chinese-owned, Swedish electric performance car maker, has scored one of the biggest electric car orders in history.
Deliveries of new Polestar 2 electric cars has begun, as part of an April 22 agreement with Hertz. Polestar will supply Hertz with 65,000 rental cars over the next five years.
Polestar split from Volvo as a relatively mature brand in its own right, operating in a space heavily populated by early-stage start-ups. Polestar 2 is assembled in Luqiao, Zhejiang (Luqiao CMA Super Factory) alongside Volvo’s C40 and XC40.
Polestar plans to increase annual sales to around290,000 cars by the end of 2025, and this growth is well underway. Polestar 2 orders are around 30,000, for a model only available since early 2022.
