Queensland Police has taken delivery of a Hyundai NEXO, as part QLD government fleet NEXO Fuel Cell deployment.

The NEXO is adorned in Queensland Police Service body wrap, lights and sirens.

Among the many achievements of NEXO is the fact that it is the first fuel-cell police car in the Southern Hemisphere. Refills will be done at the Queensland government hydrogen station in Brisbane and sues hydrogen produced locally in QLD.

This deployments takes the NEXO total to 28. There are 20 NEXOs currently with the ACT government as well as those at Hyundai’s head office in Sydney.

This is another milestone signalling that Hyundai Australia, and other interested parties, are implementing Australia’s newly found interest in hydrogen. Strangely, Australia’s National Hydrogen Strategy, which aims to establish Australia at the forefront of the global hydrogen industry by 2030, came into existence as Twiggy Forest, well-known LNP donor, invested in hydrogen.

Hyundai Motor Company Australia Chief Executive Officer, Jun Heo, said, “Deploying NEXO into the Queensland Police Service provides a terrific opportunity for police to experience the unique benefits of our zero-emission hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle while showcasing the technology to the public,” Mr. Heo said.

Interestingly, Hyundai is the only brand in Australia to offer hydrogen fuel-cell electric, hybrid,  plug-in hybrid (IONIQ), and battery electric vehicles. Those are: NEXO, IONIQ, Kona EV and IONIQ 5.

NEXO claims a range of 666km (WLTP) and cab be filled in between 3 and 5 minutes. As seen in our NEXO review HERE, the SUV purifies the air as it drives, emitting only water vapour from its exhaust.

The ANCAP five-star safety rated NEXO is the first government-certified fuel-cell electric vehicle for use on Australian roads, from the company that pioneered the mass production FCEV.
