Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 N is the brand’s first high-performance, all-electric model.
The covers were taken off the super-car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England. N brand made returned to WRC in 2014 and has had much success. Now, the focus is squarely on the E-GMP based IONIQ 5. It follows in the footsteps of sister brand KIA, and its EV6 GT which quickly became a Gay Car Bots reader favourite.
“Hyundai N spearheads the technological leadership of Hyundai Motor Company,” said Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company. “N brand’s winning combination of technological know-how and motorsport experience is pushing the limits of vehicle performance, which has most recently resulted in IONIQ 5 N, a gamechanger for electric high performance. Key developments around this vehicle will further strengthen the competitiveness of all Hyundai models going forward. This is why N brand exists.”
IONIQ 5 N used N’s expertise from electrified ‘Rolling Labs’ (e.g., RM20e, RN22e and N Vision 74) to make a car on N’s 3 catch-phrases: ‘Corner Rascal,’ ‘Racetrack Capability’ and ‘Everyday Sportscar’
“IONIQ 5 N, was developed to take driving fun to a new level by utilising the latest technologies available. Starting with IONIQ 5 N, N brand aims to deliver N’s signature fun driving experience regardless of petrol, electric or hydrogen,” said Till Wartenberg, Vice President and Head of N Brand and Motorsport at Hyundai Motor Company. “To accomplish this, we’ve closely monitored the voices of our N fans in order to fine-tune our first all-electric N with the goal of electrifying the driving passion of our most demanding N-thusiasts.”

Dual-motor AWD
IONIQ 5 N’s has 42 additional welding points and 2.1 metres of additional adhesives. Not only that, but the motor and battery mountings are reinforced
“N Pedal” is intended to address the weight and size of EVs without sacrificing the N joy and fun. By utilising decelerative force, an aggressive weight transfer is created, resulting in sharper corner entry.
Like the EV6 GT, IONIQ 5 N has Drift Optimizer to simulate the clutch kick action of rear-wheel-driven ICE cars whose drivers fancy a little sideways action. N Torque Distribution has 11 levels. The e-LSD (electronic limited slip differential) at the rear axle optimises cornering performance and control.
Power and Brakes
Dual electric motors can spin up to 21,000 RPM and are good for a stonking 478 kW / 650 PS with N Grin Boost engaged. Energy is stored in a 84 kWh battery.
N Grin Boost is good for 10 seconds once activated, and N Launch Control provides three different traction levels. IONIQ 5 N has enhanced thermal management for performance and reduced heat induced power degradation from overheating.
The enhanced battery thermal management system, with increased cooling area, better motor oil cooler and battery chiller. The independent radiators for the battery and motor maximise IONIQ 5 N’s resistance to performance degradation before and during intense track driving.
Before driving, the driver can utilise N Battery Pre-conditioning to optimise the battery cells to the most power-efficient temperature by choosing between ‘Drag’ mode for a short burst of full power or ‘Track’ mode that optimises the lowest possible battery temperature for more laps.
IONIQ 5 N has N-tuned brakes, the company’s most powerful braking system. It uses 400 mm diameter front discs with four-piston monobloc calipers, and 360 mm rear discs. To cope with extreme foreces at Nürburgring Nordschleife, Hyundai N engineers designed N Brake Regen, an N-specific region braking system developed specifically for IONIQ 5 N. It offers up to a maximum of 0.6 G decelerative force – an industry leading figure – through N Brake Regen alone and remains engaged under ABS activation with a maximum of 0.2 G. The risk of brake fade due to the EV’s relative heaviness is minimised by maximising regen braking power, which results in lower brake force applied to the mechanical brakes.
IONIQ 5, its N has Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), which will power external devices even when the vehicle is turned off.
IONIQ 5 N at Goodwood Festival of Speed 2023
IONIQ 5 N will take centre stage as the N brand makes its inaugural appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2023. N brand has constructed a dedicated stand that will showcase multiple vehicles, including i20 N WRC, N Vision 74, RN22e and the newly unveiled IONIQ 5 N. Additionally, the stand will feature various public activations, such as race simulators and photo booths.
The highlight of N brand’s presence at Goodwood will be the exclusive ‘N Moment’ held during the iconic Goodwood hill climb. The N Moment will showcase N brand’s motorsport models and rolling labs, culminating in the presentation of the new IONIQ 5 N and the world debut of N brand’s ‘IONIQ 5 N Drift Spec’ show car. Furthermore, a 2023 specification i20 N WRC will participate in the Forest rally stage.
