Electric vehicle drivers around mainland Britain without paying a single cent, says PEUGEOT UK. Thi is all thank to 4,400 free public charging outlets. Peugeot tested the theory by planning a trip in an e-208.
There are 35,000 public chargers in total, and to prove the point, PEUGEOT UK plotted a 2,688-mile using only the free outlet to charge. The route begins at Land’s End, then along England’s southern and eastern coasts, up through Scotland via John O’Groats then back to Land’s End via Wales.

PEUGEOT e-208 has a claimed 225-mile range, and even the longest stint between public charging was 168 miles between Chelmsford and Sandringham, is, within the (WLTP) range of the. PEUGEOT’s e-208 can use 100kW rapid charging, with an 0-80% taking 30 minutes.
Many of Britain’s 4,400 free chargers can be found in retail parks, hotels and public car parks. They are paid for by retailers, landowners and some Local Authorities, to attract custom, thus making a return beyond their obvious cost.
Interestingly, the ChargePlace Scotland network has over 2,000 chargers, with most free to users who have the ChargePlace Scotland app or who pay a one-off £10 fee for a charging card. To make the same rip in a petrol or diesel car of the same type is going to set you back around £421.
If you were to make an 80% charge using a 50kW rapid charger, you’d pay £26, or charge at home for a little as £6.80, something ICE cars will never be able to achieve.
Zap-Map, says 84% of free “fast” public chargers are between 7.5kW and 22kW, taking around seven hours and 33 minutes from a 7kWh charger, and five hours if the optional 11kW On-board charger is used
Julie David, Managing Director, PEUGEOT UK, said: “Road trips are a great way to experience what the UK has to offer and our research shows the significant cost savings available for electric vehicle drivers thanks to its network of free-to-use public chargers. While few motorists are likely to complete the full 2,688-mile loop, our research highlights the potentially under-used free charging network in the UK.”
PEUGEOT UK will have an electrified version of every model in its range by 2023.
