CUPRA, one of the many Volkswagen Group brands, has released details, of its first Australian battery electric vehicle, the Cupra Born. Pricing to follow closer to the early 2023 launch.
The rear-wheel drive hot hatch has a 511km, 170kW/310Nm worth of power m/h and a 0-100 time of 7.0 seconds.
Engineers says steering, ride, handling and electronic stability control (ESC) tuning, are all geared to give the driver instantaneous electric thrust. While this is not unique to this particular BEV, the look and tuning is.
Cupra Born comes with progressive steering, sports suspension, 19″ alloy wheels as standard. Buyers can opt for Dynamic chassis control, 20″ alloy wheels and wider Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres as a Performance Package. It is one of two packs available.

The LED headlamps have Light Assist (Auto High Beam), while the cabin has a 12″ infotainment display and 5.3″ driver display, DAB+ digital radio, 4 USB-C ports, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and wireless phone charging.
Active safety includes: adaptive cruise control, 360 degree camera, lane assist, front assist, park assist, side assist with rear traffic alert and more.
The second of the two packages includes heated and power adjustable front seats, Beats premium sound and more.
Cupra Born is built on a dedicated electric vehicle platform, MEB. Interior space is around that of the larger Leon hatch, with 385 litres of cargo space.
CUPRA Australia director Ben Wilks said the Born will “cement the allure of the Barcelona brand in the local market. The CUPRA Leon, Formentor and Ateca have been widely praised by Australian and international media for their clear design, performance and technology focus.” Mr Wilks said.  “The CUPRA Born takes these attributes to the next level.
“The Born is a BEV with a long 500km-plus range, exclusive rear-wheel drive hot hatch dynamics, plus the interior space and versatility of a larger vehicle. Its specifications are ideal for progressive Australian customers who will also be drawn to pricing similar to our other great hot hatch, the Leon VZx.”
The CUPRA Born comes to Australia in March/April 2023, with pricing and full specifications available prior.
