Despite a challenging automotive market, global economic headwinds, and geopolitical instability caused by an erratic and unpredictable US government, Polestar is bucking the trend. The trendy Sweed reported a 76% year-on-year jump in global retail sales for the first quarter of 2025. The 100% EV brand delivered an estimated 12,304 vehicles worldwide in Q1—holding steady with Q4 2024 figures, even as industry peers feel the pressure of a volatile economic and geopolitical landscape. In particular, Tesla was once the market darling to which all others looked but has quickly become one of the least desirable brands on the planet.
BYD has outstripped Tesla to become the world’s biggest selling EV brand, but that only serves to leave plenty of scope for luxury brands to fulfil a demographic now vacated.
That’s not to play down the importance of Polestar’s achievements. Driving this performance? A sharpened commercial strategy, an expanding retail network, and growing momentum around Polestar’s newer models—particularly the brand’s SUV offerings. Polestar has a modest garage of the freshest models available to EV buyers.
“We are on the right track and doing the right things,” said Michael Lohscheller, CEO of Polestar. “I’m pleased with the progress we are making in transforming our commercial operations. With a more active selling model, more retail partners and attractive cars, we are delivering results.”
Lohscheller was quick to note the ongoing challenges in the macro environment, emphasizing the brand’s readiness to adapt as global conditions evolve. Polestar expects to release its full-year 2024 results and file its annual Form 20-F by the end of April.

Local Wins: Australia Sees Double-Digit Growth
Closer to home, Polestar Australia continues to ride a wave of positive momentum. According to the latest Electric Vehicle Council data, the brand posted a 12% year-on-year sales lift in Q1—an impressive result considering the overall EV market in Australia is trending down compared to the same period last year.
Scott Maynard, Head of Polestar Australia, attributes the uptick to both product and presence. “We’re very pleased to see that our new model line-up is resonating with Australians following the introduction of two SUVs,” he said.
On the retail side, Polestar has grown its footprint in Australia by 50% compared to Q1 2024, a move Maynard says is transforming how the brand connects with consumers. “Our retail partners are doing a remarkable job for the brand and we’re looking forward to new, purpose-built retail Spaces coming online in the next quarter.”
With fresh product, more visibility, and a renewed sales strategy, Polestar appears to be carving a distinct lane in the crowded EV space—one that’s proving resilient, even as the road ahead remains unpredictable.
