Buying a used EV can feel like dating someone with a mysterious past—you want to believe it’s all good under the surface, but there’s always that nagging doubt. Enter Polestar, who’s just added a dose of transparency to the pre-owned electric car scene with a new Battery State-of-Health (BSOH) certificate for the Polestar 2. And it’s about time.
Announced as part of the Polestar Pre-owned program, the certificate offers a verified snapshot of a used Polestar 2’s usable battery capacity. It’s not just a nice-to-have—it’s a long-overdue move in an industry where used EVs can sometimes be more mystery box than open book.
Polestar’s approach goes deeper than a battery check. Each car goes through a 112-point inspection at an official service centre, with independent verification of mileage, service history, and ownership. Buyers also get the balance of an 8-year battery warranty, plus a 24-month vehicle warranty and roadside assistance—a nod to the fact that, for many, EVs still feel like uncharted territory.

But perhaps the most interesting part? Used Polestar 2s receive the same over-the-air (OTA) updates as new ones. Since 2020, more than 20 software updates have quietly refined the car—adding Apple CarPlay, Waze, YouTube, and even improving battery efficiency and range. It’s like buying an iPhone 12 that suddenly starts acting like a 15 Pro Max.
Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller puts it simply: “We’ve just added another reason for used EV buyers to purchase a pre-owned Polestar 2.” But the certificate is more than just a sales line—it’s a step towards building trust in second-hand electric cars, especially for buyers wary of costly battery replacements or hidden wear and tear.
In a market where used petrol cars can get a tick of approval from any roadside dealer with a clipboard and a handshake, used EVs need a little more finesse—and that’s what Polestar’s betting on. With the BSOH certificate and software that keeps ageing cars feeling young, they might just be onto something.
Because really, who says second-hand has to feel second-rate?
