Hyundai IONIQ 5 sat for its driving test, and passed. Hyundai campaign video features the electric, self-driving IONIQ 5 robotaxi navigating its way through “the Strip”, as well as a host of other situations. Although full self driving requires local legislation, vehicle autonomy is getting closer.
Pearl Outlaw is visually impaired American. The video features Pearl and mother, Ruth. Pearl’s Retinitis Pigmentosa prevents her from holding a driver’s licence, limiting her ability and mobility.
Able-sighted people can go where they want, when they want, and the campaign suggests that in the future, the visually impaired will enjoy almost as much freedom. The goal is one that car makers have been working towards for decades and is the reason “future mobility” is such a catch cry.

Kandice Jones is the examiner who tested the IONIQ 5 robotaxi. “I’m a DMV Certified Driving Examiner with 25 years of experience. In that time, I’ve failed thousands and thousands of students in the interest of public safety. It’s going to be the same criteria – just like testing a human. We’ll be monitoring the speed, lane changes. I’m going to grade manoeuvres, making a complete stop, left turns, maintaining the lane, and of course reaction time.”
Ms. Jones was impressed with IONIQ 5’s speed control, lane changes and manoeuvring, being able to obey a stop sign, perform left turns, and its reaction time to developing hazards. Much of the doubt around full self-driving cars involves the uncertainty of programming involved. Will such vehicles be able to determine whether or not to avoid a human if faced with an ethical choice?
IONIQ 5 robotaxi is a collaboration between Hyundai Motor Group and autonomous driving technology developer Motional. The IONIQ 5 robotaxi achieves consistent driving performance in various driving environments thanks to its suite of advanced sensors, combining LiDAR, radar and cameras.
“As a company that pursues freedom of mobility, we at Hyundai aim to exhibit the safety and trustworthiness of the IONIQ 5 robotaxi through this campaign,” said Sungwon Jee, Senior Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer at Hyundai Motor Company. “We will continue our efforts to communicate our AI-based autonomous driving technology, which is set to provide positive changes to our customers’ everyday lives.”
