Polestar has taken the extraordinary steps of creating and launching an X (formerly Twitter) bot to combat the anti-climate change brigade. EVs and renewable energy have come in for a concerted

Vested interests have thrown vast sums at disinformation campaigns designed to sway public opinion. Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, the campaigns claim that climate change is “not real”, or is not the result of the activity of mankind since the industrial revolution.

Polestar’s bot will debunk the most common inaccuracies relating to climate change within the automotive industry. Polestar has taken a firm stand on vehicle production, and how the life cycle of a car affects the planet. See our story on Polestar 4 HERE

Climate mis- and disinformation on social media platforms has been particularly prevalent. Scientists are so concerned at the increase in “climate denier bots”, that the United Nations has warned that mis- and disinformation are “delaying urgent action to ensure a liveable future for the planet”. A report by Climate Action Against Disinformation reveals that X ranked lowest out of the five major social media platforms for actions to limit the spread of misinformation. The bots have been a source often quoted in traditional media without the scantest attempt at fact checking.

Fredrika Klarén, Head of Sustainability at Polestar, comments: “The deliberate misuse of climate data is incredibly damaging. Particularly now, in the lead-up to COP28, the conversation is muddied between fact and fiction.

“We believe that the opposite – a truthful use of scientific data – can be a powerful tool to help navigate climate action, and we encourage everyone to join us in spreading this on social platforms.”

The bot is live now, starting on the 23rd and continuing to the 30th of November in the lead-up to COP28. The Polestar Truth Bot will respond to climate myths on X using factual data. This includes the recent IPCC ‘Impacts of global warming of 1.5 °C’ special report, and the IEA’s ‘The Role of Critical Minerals in Clean Energy Transitions’ report.

Since 2020, Polestar has shared Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) for all its models in production. The data has details on emissions and climate impact, and information on material sourcing and supply chain traceability. Polestar is able to track production facts on its batteries for example. Climate change deniers are also critical of the batteries used in EVs, the sources of Lithium, and how batteries are created and disposed of.

A picture surfaced on X (then Twitter) and Facebook purporting to be of a field of EVs with damaged batteries leaching toxic compounds into the soil. AFP Factcheck debunked the story, revealing the EVs were the result of a failed car sharing programme, nothing to do with being electric. Their were not damaged, nor leaking, or in any other way faulty.

Earlier in 2023, alongside Rivian, Polestar initiated the Pathway report from Kearney, which sees a joint effort towards collective climate action within the automotive industry. A discussion panel, called the Global Automotive Stocktake, to be held by Polestar on 6 December 2023, will be another contribution to the transparency debate during COP28.
