Tesla Move Over, the Self Driving Driving GMC Sierra is Here

We’ve tested autonomous vehicle on closed tracks before. We’ve even taken Tesla’s Auto Pilot for a spin on a highway. None of those systems has really instilled any kind of confidence. Under Australian law, a driver must keep their hands on the wheel, but not, it seems, in the USA.

The new 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 arrives in autumn. It has gotten a raft of important updates to design, capability and technology which includes the very latest iteration of Super Cruise available on the Sierra Denali.

Super Cruise introduces on the Sierra the capability to trailer while driving hands-free on compatible roads, along with the new automatic lane change feature.

GMC claims that Super Cruise is the industry’s first true hands-free driver-assistance system.  It uses the driver attention system and precision LiDAR generated map along with live data from cameras, sensors and GPS.

Even though system is driving the vehicle, the driver remains responsible. To make sure eyes are on the road at all times, the driver attention system uses a camera at the top of the steering column along with infrared lights to detect where the driver is looking while Super Cruise is switch on. The driver attention system will spot when the driver has is looking away from the road ahead for too long, and the steering wheel light bar will then warn the driver to look ahead.

Driver monitoring systems like this are in common use to detect inattention even in cars with standard lane departure.

The thing other drivers will no doubt be asking is: Do I want to be on a highway with a truck and trailer hurtling along with the driver not driving?
