Toyota Recalls C-HR for unintentional Park Brake Activation

Toyota has issued a recall for 2348 CH-R Hybrids produced between 2 May 2023 and 30 May 2024.

The recall involves software updates to prevent unintended activation of the parking brake when towing or using a bike rack. Affected Australian C-HRs will whack the Parking Support Brake (PKSB) system on as soon as reverse is selected. Even if the system is turned off, the moment the driver shifts from park into reverse the system will re-arm and activate the park brake again.

Toyota advises owners are able to drive their cars normally as long as they don’t try to tow or use a bike rack.

PKSB logic is well tested except, apparently, for when a towbar is fitted.

The remedy is a software upgrade taking about an hour.

Recalls happen regularly in all industries, and while inconvenient, are intended to keep things tidy. It is when faults are known and no recall is issued, that customers are most at risk. In this case, the fix is simple but depending on the dealer, owners may need to allow more than an hour.

Contact the dealer to asses availability, and any owners who have previously taken their C-HR in to dealer for this issue will be refunded any payments.
