Toyota Tundra Debuts in November 2024: A Pick-Up Game-Changer

After six years of anticipation, Toyota’s full-size Tundra pickup will finally hit Australian shores in November 2024. The much-awaited launch follows final approval from Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan, marking a global first for the brand.

In an unprecedented move, Toyota partnered with Walkinshaw Automotive Group to re-engineer the US-built Tundra from left-hand drive to right-hand drive, transforming it at Walkinshaw’s facility in Melbourne. This collaboration is the first of its kind, with Toyota working alongside a third-party manufacturer to meet its stringent quality, durability, and reliability standards.

Toyota Australia’s Vice President of Sales Marketing and Franchise Operations, Sean Hanley, called it a “momentous achievement,” and one that raises the bar for re-engineering projects. “This is not just a ‘simple’ left-to-right-hand drive conversion,” Hanley said. “The Tundra has been completely re-engineered by Toyota engineers, working closely with Walkinshaw, using parts from models like the LandCruiser 300 Series to ensure the highest quality standards.”

The project has been a collective effort, involving Toyota North America and feedback from hundreds of Australian customers in the Tundra Insider Program, which began in September 2023. Customers tested the vehicle in real-world conditions, offering insights that helped Toyota fine-tune the final product. “It was a massive effort from everyone involved,” Hanley added.

Initially, the Tundra will be launched in the Limited grade, with a top-tier Australian premium version arriving in Q2, 2025. Both models are built on Toyota’s proven TNGA-F platform, also used by the LandCruiser 300 Series, and powered by a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 i-FORCE MAX engine. The beastly engine delivers 326kW of power and 790Nm of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and a part-time 4WD system. It offers a hefty 4.5-tonne towing capacity, making it ideal for those who need serious pulling power.

The Limited version doesn’t skimp on features either. Expect 20-inch alloy wheels, leather-accented seats with heating and ventilation, a 14-inch multimedia touchscreen with a 12-speaker JBL audio system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and a trailer brake controller, all wrapped in Toyota’s signature quality. Meanwhile, the premium version will take things up a notch with a panoramic moonroof, black-painted alloy wheels, and luxurious additions like massage seats and a head-up display.

The Tundra Insider Program will continue until the end of 2024, with customers providing feedback to ensure the vehicle meets the unique needs of the Australian market. More details about the Australian release will be available closer to the November launch, but one thing’s certain: Toyota’s Tundra is set to shake up the local full-size pickup market.
