In order to understand what the EX 90 will be like; it is probably a good idea to have a look at the 2023 XC90. The refreshed XC 90 will have an ICE drivetrain with hybrid options including the familiar “recharge” plug in hybrid. It will have the Goole OS, and an updated plug-in version. We’re reviewing the 2021-22 XC90 model this week. It is a 7-seater and is the current flagship Volvo. EX90 will be sold alongside the refreshed XC90
The EX 90 will not be called “Embla” as had previously been proffered, but will follow Volvo’s carefully planned 2030 target of being 100% electric. Various renderings show a lower “concept car-like” roofline like that of the Embla.
The rendering concepts showed a pared down interior and simplified exterior, powered purely by an electric motor. The “Embla” concept’s cabin is a modern take in private jet meets luxury yacht. While it is unlikely to quite so breath-taking, no doubt cues such as the space created by a flat floor, will be maintained.

What We Know about the EX90 for sure:
Volvo has bene tight-lipped but the details, but say the 100% electric flagship will be a new era for the Swedish car maker. Volvo will continue to aim for a car that does not crash, meanwhile, they account for the human element.
Safety-obsessed Volvo continues to raise the bar, with the EX90 having calm and soothing interior.
Safety includes the usual sensors, but teams them up with LIDAR to give the onboard computer a real-time version of the surroundings. Data from previous and future crashes is gathered and inspected and used to improve future prospects of all drivers, not just those in the Volvo.
When Volvo invented the 3-point seat belt, so keen were they to keep people safe, the technology was given to the world freely. Will data gathered by the EX90 be so available? Over the air updates could be a two-way swap of information. Either way, the accumulation of driving data can reduce death and serious injury up to 20%.
Volvo states the LIDAR works day or night, never gets tired, and is never distracted. Estimated crash avoidance of 9% could lead to millions of accidents that otherwise would have caused mayhem.
EX90 Watches you:
Internal sensors and cameras keep watch over the driver. In house developed algorithms judge whether the driver’s eyes are actually monitoring the road ahead, beyond what any Volvo has ever been capable of.
Taking the case of the driver becoming unresponsive, EX90 will gently nudge, then be more insistent. If no response is received, the EX90 safely stops and calls for assistance. Presumably it activates hazard flashers and is able to notify Volvo central of the car’s location. It may even be able to provide a picture of the scene, inside and out.
Exciting times lay ahead as Volvo promises more detail soon.
