2020 Jaguar E-Pace Chequered Flag
If week days are for work, and weekends are for play, can a Jaguar E-Pace SUV serve you with the reliability of a faithful old retainer?
In short, yes.
Not only that, but E-Pace is smoother than a Bublé ballad, and sexier than an underwear model, almost.

Is Jaguar E-Pace good looking?
E-Pace looks a little bit like a schoolbook drawing. Huge wheels, and a low roof, are accentuated by a muscular body. If you squint really hard, you might think E-Pace looks like a curvy version of Range Rover’s Evoke.
The handsome SUV is more of a lifestyle vehicle than a hairy-chested 4X4. You’re more likely to see it parked up on an immaculately paved driveway that up the side of a mountain.
Jaguar knows what most car makers know, and that is SUVs almost never leave the tarmac unless it is to park on the footpath for a wash.

Is Jaguar E-Pace Comfortable?
Remember the old jokes at dinner parties? You know the ones? “What do you need if you own a Jag? Answer: A spare Jag.”
The jokes may persist, but Jags are now as solid as the Bank of England.
E-Pace has smart entry, so you get in by pulling on the door handle without unlocking first. You settle in by adjusting the seat with a button. You start the E-Pace with another button. Once you’ve given the gear lever a gentle pull, you’re on your way.
Sydney’s roads are moody at the best of times. The battered and beaten surfaces are potholed and broken. Bits of bitumen have come away, and the lanes have a dizzying array of barricades, leaving the street looking like the aftermath of a small war. E-Pace capers over the catastrophic surfaces with nary a jostle.
Course chip tarmac transmits a little unwelcome noise. Otherwise, the cabin is calm and soothing.
How does E-Pace Drive?
One might think a puny 4-cylinder pulling a brawny SUV would be overly taxing. Not a bit of it. Although E-Pace is a hefty lassie, the turbo Ingenium engine is more than up to the task. With 183kw and 365Nm, your floored loafer will get you to 100 in a mere 7.1 seconds.
Power is transferred to all four wheels through a gorgeously smooth 9-speed automatic. E-Pace has drive-modes for on and off-road use, and paddle shifters for those who like shift-em-themselves gears.
In town, steering is feather-light. It gets more weight the faster you go.
E-Pace is as easy to park as a shopping trolly. Sensors and cameras surround you in a fluffy cocoon. You may sit very high, but those cameras and sensors give you a real sense of security, and a great view.
She is a spritely little thing too, but that doesn’t come at the cost of an eye-watering fuel bill. 7.7L/100k is more than adequate, so you’d get almost all the way from Sydney to Melbourne on a single tank.
On most surfaces, the tyres transmitted little noise to the occupants. In fact, on smother roads, the only thing you can hear is the cool air gently flowing from the vents.
Is there enough space inside?
E-Pace feels both spacious and cosy.
4 adults will be extremely comfortable, but there is room for a 5th if you must. The driving position is excellent, but you definitely need to take the time to get the steering wheel and seat just where you want them first.
Rear seats have oodles of room for legs, and whatever your motivations, you all find enough space in the boot for the lifestyle you think you have.
Conclusion:
Jaguar E-Pace is sexy. The chequered Flag Edition adds extra style thanks for a couple of decals and some flashy badges. While I’d love to see a surper-charged 5.0L V8 on board, the 4-cylinder is more than sufficient.
Jaguar’s biggest asset is the long and noble history. Atmosphere is instantly purified just by the presence of a Jag. It has the persona of royalty, without the boardroom stuffiness of wood panelling.
Quite simply, there is nothing I could improve on.
