A friend recently reported the proud purchase of her BYD Atto 3 on social media. Praise came thick and fast, from advice on wall chargers to how to get the most out of the Atto 3 range.

There was, however, a single dissenter and here is the post (with names removed) from said blithering idiot:

XXXXXXXXX

XXXX let me know how you feel when your battery needs replacing!! Some Tesla owners that paid 90k for their vehicle less than 10 years ago are now having to pay 45k plus for a new battery. Before anyone dares to have another shot at me, maybe they should research how much ore needs to be mined to make one EV battery or what child slave labour is involved in mining some of the minerals needed to make these. To bring the potential energy to drivetrain needed to travel 500km is by far less harmful to the environment with using diesel than electricity. I could absolutely smash anyone down with facts about this but the main problem is that the left is very good with recruiting ignorant followers for their agenda. I pity the Fool!! People are waking up by the millions every day and the world is watching.

XXXX, I don’t truely wish you bad luck with your car. I blame the elite few and corrupt governments for trying to deceive it’s own people” (SIC)

ABOVE: BYD Atto 3, Polestar 3, Tesla Model Y, Rudolf Diesel, Tom Ogle, Nicola Tesla

Ignoring the appalling sentence construction, grammar and spelling, his facts were, at best, questionable. He seems to be anti-battery, as he busily types the mindless tirade on his smartphone.

Before we examine his random shitshow of accusations, let’s look at history’s forgotten heroes and their mysterious deaths:

  • Tom Ogle invented a vapour carburetor capable of 200mpg, and dropped dead under strange circumstances. His invention was sold, but has been buried in the bottom drawer of the X-Files. The fossil fuel industry had much to lose.
  • Nicola Tesla, after whom the Tesla EV is named, died alone in mysterious circumstances in his hotel room. His inventions were numerous and many would have meant the end of coal and oil. Yes, he was 86, but his death, attributed to a heart attack, was later revised. Again, the fossil fuel lobby was displeased.
  • Rudolf Diesel, inventor of the now famous engine, vanished from the decks of a steamship crossing the English Channel. Some say it was suicide, and others theorise he was thrown overboard at the orders of the German High Command. Regardless, his engine was designed to run on vegetable oil, and the fossil fuel suppliers were worried.

Then we move from fossil fuels to other industries.

Those who mined and sold Asbestos told us it was safe, denying the link between the minute fibres and lung cancer, asbestosis. The tobacco industry spent billions convincing is that smoking was safe, denying the link between tobacco and lung cancer. More recently, the makers of man-made stone benchtops denied the link between the fine quartz particles, and lung cancer.

In each of these instances, similar tactics were used by the vested interests to either discredit the technology or to attack the inventor. If that failed, the facts were attacked and discredited, and finally if all ese fails, the propaganda arm swings into action.

The brings us neatly back to the climate change debate, emissions regulations, and renewable energy.

Ol’ mate, in the quote above, is a prime example of the anti climate-change/renewable-energy/EV brigade. As we transition into a world sans CO2-causing dinosaur-burning, the technology is moving so fast that it is almost impossible to keep up.

Putting renewables aside, the batteries that power our modern lives are undergoing change. SSB (solid State Battery) would eliminate many of the toxic elements currently in use. There are other advancements that is reducing the size, while increasing the energy density of current EV storage solutions.

Finally, the claims that 500km travelled with diesel is far less harmful than the same distance by electric power is untrue. First, fossil-fuel diesel is one of the most damaging fuels environmentally speaking, arguably more so than coal.

Almost all public EV charging is done using renewable energy, but even if coal-fired electricity was used, an EV is still far more efficient and less damaging to the environment. In other words it takes less coal to run an EV for 500km than an petrol or diesel in an ICE-powered vehicle.

Battery reconditioning is making EV battery replacement cheaper, and old EV batteries can have second lives as domestic power storage. As reported previously, car makers have repeatedly told us that the battery will probably outlast the car.

Literally everything that peanut said was untrue, but then, gaslighting is their raison d’etre.
