130 New Kia Cars for Australian Open 2024 as Nadal Pulls Out

Kia has been a major sponsor of the Australian Open for as long as many of us can remember.

As the longest-running major partner of the Australian Open, we are delighted to once again play a pivotal role in supporting what is widely regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events while highlighting our ongoing commitment to the electric vehicle transition,” commented Charles Ryu, Senior Vice President, and Head of the Global Brand & CX Division at Kia.

This year, Kia handed over 130 brand new cars as part of the AO24 fleet.

“The enduring partnership between Kia and the Australian Open has played a major role in helping us transform the AO into the phenomenal sporting and entertainment event that it is today, connecting and engaging with millions of fans around the globe,” said Craig Tiley, Australian Open Tournament Director.

“The Kia fleet has become an iconic sight in Melbourne during the AO and transports the players and their teams seamlessly around the city. This year we are delighted to see the new all-electric EV9 SUV flagship model join the fleet for the first time”.

The large fleet of cars includes 15 EV9, 10 EV6, 10 Carnival and 95 Sorentos. EV9 is the newly arrived Kia flagship and will make its AO debut this year.

As with all sponsorships, the advantage is a two-wat affair, and this year will see new ways for people to interact with the brand. A collaboration with Uber One will see riders being transported to the tennis venue in electric Kia models including EV6 and EV9.

Kia had previously engaged with tennis great, Rafael Nadal who withdrew from the tennis event this year with injuries sustained during a recent match in Brisbane. The tennis star will return to Spain for treatment for a micro tear in a muscle.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion, who won the title at Melbourne Park in 2022, announced his withdrawal in a social media post on Sunday.

“During my last match in Brisbane I had a small problem on a muscle that as you know made me worried,” he wrote.

“Once I got to Melbourne I have had the chance to make an MRI and I have (a) micro tear on a muscle, not in the same part where I had the injury and that’s good news.

“Right now I am not ready to compete at the maximum level of exigence in five sets matches. I’m flying back to Spain to see my doctor, get some treatment and rest.”
