2020 VW T-Cross Style, a Little SUV with Big Promises
VW T-Cross hits the compact segment of the market with a bang. It sets a high bar, and may well find itself a market leader among the young, hip, and happening, crowd.
What it’s got:
There are 2 models, pithily called T-Cross “Life, and “Style.” We snaffled the top model. Style has a nice set of 18” alloys, and smart entry/start. Inbuilt Navigation is easy to use, and can be also displayed on the driver’s digital dash. The driver’s instruments displayed on this large LCD can be viewed by scrolling through content options.
There is a hint of Tiguan about the looks, and like Tiguan, has adaptive LED headlights. There are LED DTRLs too. See the full list of options and specifications BELOW.

Inside:
There is a lot of hard plastic inside. If you think hard plastic is nasty, you might feel let down. Funnily enough, I don’t normally like it, but it appears to be decent quality so this time I’ll forgive it.
There T-Cross is a nice patterned dash, a wireless phone charger, and a power and USB point in the centre console.
Seats are firm but comfortable and have manual adjustments.
T-Cross Style gets Dual Zone climate control, with a sync feature, hoorah. While there is plenty of room in the front, rear passengers have only a few cms of knee room with 4 x 6” adults on board. While you won’t be inviting too many friends on road trips, there is plenty of space for around town duty.
Cargo space is fabulous for a car this size. Clever rear seats slide forward slightly, adding even more space, and with rear seats folded down, is positively huge. Figures are 385L, 455L and 1281L respectively.
T-Cross seats are covered in cosy Comfort Sport Cloth, which may sound suss, but is soft and begs to be stroked.
Infotainment, often a bit of a letdown in lower end cars, is brilliant. Our 8” screen included Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. The optional 300w Beats speakers were clear, even at full tilt. We listen to all music at neutral settings, and would have liked more bass.

The Drive:
What a peach T-Cross is on the road.
Power from the 3-cylinder turbo petrol unit is adequate for most punters. 85kw/200Nm’s worth of oomph gets the front wheels through a 7-speed DSG dry clutch automatic. DSG Sport mode is entered by pulling back the lever a second time, and manual mode by shifting to the side. The lever, or paddle shifters allows drivers a bit more control. Don’t bother. It is great the way it is.
Ride is excellent on most surfaces.
Only the most pot-holed goat tracks give the little VeeDub any trouble. Even then, ride isn’t harsh. Most of the time you won’t feel a thing.
Steering is light at parking speeds, and firm on the open road. Handling is more akin to a comfy cruiser than a sporty coupe. Softish ride makes the body roll a little. Although T-Cross keeps its line through corners, we suggest a more leisurely approach to motoring will be more enjoyable.
As the video shows, the cabin is nice and quiet. In fact, only nasty course chip tarmac can be heard. We liked that a lot.
Conclusion:
T-Cross should be a hit with the young, and the old. The price is budget-friendly too.
A cheeky weekend away for two, an airport run, or the weekly shopping, fits T-Cross perfectly. Let’s face it, cars are expensive. Why spend more when you don’t need to.
We give T-Cross a thumbs up.
