ŠKODA is a Volkswagen brand so is part of a group that expanded rapidly. That is a good thing with platforms and technology that can be shared across many brands.
Kamiq has undergone changes here and there. Technology has been a big winner with tasty treats like Travel Assist, and wireless Apple Carplay/Android auto.
Kamiq was already great, but the refreshed cabin brought a new feeling, and the language is very much one you can get on board with.
There are lashings of leather, brilliant sound, and heating for 4 seats. Sadly, ŠKODA omitted DAB+ so stream it from LISTNR while leaving your phone in the Qi charger.
110kw and 250Nm doesn’t sound like much, but it has the wheels scampering, especially up at the farm. As you know, we take “da boyz” away for impromptu weekends away. We headed through Sydney’s secret sandstone canyons where cell phone reception is patchy at best. It felt like a treat to be somewhere modern life can’t get at you unless it really tries.

Part of our journey is a nasty stretch of dirt road that ruins unsuspecting organs, but this is where the ŠKODA Kamiq shone. Quaint villages can’t be got at without some effort, but the beautiful ride was sensational. In fact, with 4 of us on board, it was even better. Granted, the luggage was packed into soft duffels only. Gay men are not known for economy when it comes to travel. We had totes, and bags of booze, and blankets ready for a night in an old Cobb and Co inn.
The weekend was perfect. The journey into our past took on gorgeous open fields veiled in a forsty coat, and vast gaping chasms of ancient sandstone. We sat at the fire sipping warmed brandy, reminiscing about our fairly short trip. It is unusual for 4 people to agree, but we were universal in our praise for Kamiq.
Although chock-a-block, it took our gear, with the electric hatch taking several goes to shut. We had some cheerful music playing, adding to the holiday-like atmosphere.
Kamiq had oodles of tech, and with each taking turns at the tiller, we fell deeply in love with it. Kamiq didn’t pretend to be anything other than a cheery little chap who is eager to please.

What the boys thought:
Alan:
Kamiq is elegant inside and out. There is just enough power to make it useful, and a cabin that swallows vastly more than its looks would have you believe. Seating is deliciously comfortable and each of we 4 had seat heating. On a 4c night, it was much appreciated. The climate control is toasty, but there is nothing better than a warm bum as you snuggle under a blanket. There are USB-C X2 in both the front and the back, and wireless CarPlay. Who isn’t going to love it?
Casper:
I expected a nasty cabin, but I was wrong. It was warm and inviting with loads of gadgets, a digital driver screen, and a huge entertainment screen. If you put a posher badge on it, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was a little Audi.
OK I overstate a little, because there is a bit of cheap plastic here and there, but the design is lovely, and outside it is gorgeous. I love the headlights.
Max:
Once I got over the fact that it is front wheel drive only, I was sold. It is a hatch that is very tall, not an SUV. And SUVs have more expected of them too, so think of it as a crossover. We didn’t get the anticipated fuel figures, but that wicked little engine is is lovely, and so smooth that you can hardly tell it is running.
It handles brilliantly, but damp roads frequently bring on hairy moments so I’d like an AWD option.
Nico:
I can see classic Italian design at work here. There is a lot of cheap plakky bits, but it still manages to look smashing. it is almost 43 grand on the road, which is a big wad of dosh, so I’d still look at something Korean.
Conclusion:
We loved it. Kamiq is smooth and quiet and although we asked slightly more of it than it was designed for, it did it with glee.
We happily do it again.
