Starting a story with a grandiose title is often marred by quicksand-like booby traps. This booby-trapped was epic, on a global scale. The GR Corolla GTS was originally part of a story joining its sainted sister, the Honda Civic type R.
The GR Corolla GTS had other ideas. It had already been spanked right royally by previous reviewers determined to beat the 0-100 time of the publication before it. This rampant dick-swinging left the GR Corolla GTS’s clutch hanging by a thread. I just happened to be the poor schmuck who participated in its last 30km’s worth of death throes.

The Breakdown
We collected to GR Corolla GTS from its top-secret inner Sydney subterranean bunker. Driving up the ramp felt slightly odd according to my co-driver, me in the Type R and he in the GR. As my eyes squinted driving into the bright sunlight, the phone rang. Sebastian reported an odd smell akin to the bold use of brakes, or engine oil aflame, he couldn’t decide which.
Only a few kilometres of city afternoon traffic lay ahead.
Once ensconced in our local lock-up, we gathered over a shandy to compare notes and to plan our comparison.
“Smell that,” he asked. There was a dissipating whiff of failure that would warrant a mention when returning the car. Little did we know the opportunity would not present itself.
Later that week, I set off down the Hume, intending to lunch at the George IV Hotel. Picton’s grand dame is the oldest hotel in the area, and one of the oldest in the country still operating for its original purpose.
As I headed through the M5-East tunnel, the clutch felt utterly disinterested. Further along the M5, I was caught short, as gents of a certain age often are. After taking advantage of a convenient tree, I set off again, accelerating smoothly to 110 kph to join the highway traffic.
However, all was not right.

ABOVE: 2023 Toyota GR Corolla GTS – The breakdown and magnificent comeback
With the Smart Cruise turned on, revs started wandering drunkenly up and down the dial. As I crested the next hill, things went badly tits-up. I had moved to the outside lane to pass trucks slowing at the hill, but the revs read more like the wav-form of a rock concert, up and down. Finally, the demented pendulum gave out and we lost power completely. I’d switched the Cruise off, but there was no resistance to the gears.
I knew something was seriously amiss, but at 110kph there are few choices if one is not to find oneself marooned in the fast lane. I indicated, finding a lucky break on the outside lane of the dual carriageway. I had enough momentum to coast to the on-ramp of the Partridge VC rest stop, far from the live lanes. There I sat, pushing the clutch in and out to no effect. In gear, clutch released, the engine revved, going against everything experience told me.
The beast was dead.
I schlepped back to the rest stop’s conveniently located coffee cart, ordered a large skinny latte, and called Toyota Roadside assist. Meanwhile, the weather turned turtle as a line of hail storms sweeping in over the hills. With no shelter at the coffee cart, I sprinted back to the car.
The hail came, whipped by squals of cyclonic frenzy, rocking the car as it was pelted with ice and enough water to swamp a battle ship.
In New South Wales, our NRMA is contracted by most brands to conduct rescues. After a few very long hours I was in the cab of a flatbed, the GR Corolla GTS resting peacefully on the back. I was conveyed to the local Toyota dealer whose staff were unable to comprehend that this was a “Toyota” Toyota. I took a shortcut through the mire of confusion, chucked them the keys, and asked for a lift to the nearest station.
6 hours after departing, I crossed the threshold of my inner city digs.
The Diagnosis
It was difficult to elicit the particulars, but the GR Corolla GTS needed the gearbox, clutch, and engine to be given a once-over. Its eggs had been well and truly scrambled, so one thing was made clear; no car can suffer the rigour of relentless abuse.
On the DL, I was told that track drives, 0-100 tests, and launch control imitations done by aspiring Lewis Hamiltons, killed the car stone dead. Manic loops were done, with the inept boob behind the wheel leaving the clutch partially depressed. No matter what the car, this intolerable madness is beyond design specifications of even the most exotic of exotics.
