All New Peugeot 2008: Class Leading in Every Way
Some people, uninformed people, snub Peugeot. They say the unreliable French cars are underpowered and overpriced. Oh dear.
Let’s have a butchers at those at those flimsy, baseless, mealy-mouthed mutterings. First, haters always gonna hate. They’d find fault with a cure for cancer, so negating those Neanderthal ninnies takes a mere jiff.
Peugeot has a 5 year warranty, and consistent 5 star ANCAP ratings. They’re early adopters of the latest trendy tech too. The exteriors ooze class, and the interiors are utterly delicious.
To be honest, the previous generation of Peugeots were a trifle tame, but a joy to drive. Go back another generation or two, and the plakky parts were a bit of a bother.
The last decade has seen a myriad of modifications. The build has been buoyed, the tech has been tallied, and the design has been dolled-up.
Tasty treats in the Quartz SUV and E-Legend concepts show what Peugeot can do when it busts open its dress-up box. They banish the boring and distance the dystopian, and what is left, is simply stunning.
2008’s skin is carefully crafted, with every angle considered, punctuated by subtle facets and deeply sculptured lights. Triple claw LEDs front and back turn humble arrays in to a big, blousy, event.

ABOVE: 2020 Peugeot 2008, Quartz Concept, E-Legend Concept
There are two models:
Allure is the base model with a 96kw/230Nm 3-pot turbo. GT-Line is gone, replaced by GT-Sport. A middle model will muddy the mix in due course. At $34,990, Allure is many shekels above what one might want for a small SUV. Nay, it is worth every centime. A canny buyer will make a bee-line to the top. The 114kw/240Nm GT-Sport is where it’s at. While $43,990 is a chunk of change, the top 2008 has almost every I dotted.
The base model gets LED lights up front, but the GT-Sport has super-sexy Matrix LED light. They leave on-comers one and all bathed in a limpid pool, while blasting everything around it with the light of seven suns.
The key need never leave your purse.
A press of a button allows access to the inner sanctum. This cosy cabin is a monument to modernity. It eschews the Scandy Less-Is-More attitude, in favour of subtle luxury with overt tech supremacy.
A 3-D digital dash is just the start. I-Cockpit has a winged binnacle perched atop the racing-style steering wheel. No need for an HUD here thanks very much.
The centre console and stack have melded in to something altogether more luscious. A generous wide screen tablet sits above a row of twin-function piano keys. All functions have been subsumed therein.
Fettle your climate, music, and personal settings to your heart’s content. And with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, music, messages, directions, and all manner of personal pleas can be made just by speaking. A little man in the dash will do everything but gently cup your plumbs. Your every whim is there for the asking. And, for a change, all the tech works first fumble.
Never get another speeding ticket!
Another of my bold claims, but prove me wrong if you can.
The system scans ahead, and warns you of speed changes. Once activated, follow the prompts of the limiter or active cruise. When the speed sign changes, double click the MEM button, and Bob’s your uncle. The plucky Pug will not let you exceed the limit. On the highway, it will change speeds as needed, all while you’re having a masseuse tend to your nethers.
The Oily Bits Are a little confusing.
Here is my question:
Why, oh Why, oh WHY!
FFS Peugeot, a 6-speed auto? The base model gets a 1.2, 3-banger, with 96kw and a 6-cog, while those in the posher pews get the same 1.2L, but this time has 114kw, and 8 speeds. It is by the same engine, and automatic makers, people! That is just plain cheap. Stuff and nonsense! No, I will not have it Peugeot, get thee hence!
Nante on the 96-er. Send it, and the 6-speed to the sin bin. Begone!
The Drive, mmmmmmmm yum.
City-slicking, a laid-back affair at best, was dispatched with such alacrity, that no hairs were turned, not even a one. There is automated parking for the chronically lazy.
Country cruising brought back many a memory of bucolic bliss. Corners passed quickly, one after t’other. Paddles were pounded, but only the topper. I pushed the Pug, possibly past its prime. It said naught. In fact, it egged me on ever further.
A nimble digit fingered the modes, and with Sport spied, fire followed. We proved you don’t need a shit-ton of testosterone-inducing donk up front. 1.2 is plenty, because it’s not the size, it is how you use it, and truer words were never issued.
Warp ten on the straights is fab until you meet a bend you don’t like. Peugeot says, “Yes please, gimmie more.” Unless your best mate is a Mr. McLaren, I defy you to have more fun, pack more action, or be smugger, than when you’re driving a 2008.
Gay Campers, Clean-up Aisle Ten.
Last but not least, those of you who like it rough, fear not. Pack the Pug with pots of paraphernalia. Head off the track, but just a bit. As long as you’re pitching your tent not too far from a supply of sensibly priced booze, you’re all set.
Is 2008 the best?
Like I said,
Prove me wrong. Betcha can’t.
