BYD Plugs In: Four New Electrified Models

BYD is supercharging its Australian line-up, confirming four shiny new arrivals that will jolt the local market in the coming months: ATTO 1, ATTO 2, SEALION 5, and SEALION 8. It’s the biggest model blitz the brand has attempted here, and the timing couldn’t be better as Aussie buyers flock to electric and hybrid power.

Due in November, the pint-sized ATTO 1 will hit the streets first — a compact EV that’s already stormed global markets as the SEAGULL in China and DOLPHIN SURF in Europe, selling over a million units. Designed for urban life, it’s zippy, affordable, and unapologetically modern — the kind of car that lets you slip into a parking spot tighter than a gym shirt after Christmas lunch. BYD says it’ll be Australia’s most affordable EV, which should send a few rivals scrambling to sharpen their pencils.

Hot on its heels, the slightly larger ATTO 2 will offer more space, more tech, and more appeal for drivers who want a stylish runabout that doesn’t scream “eco-warrior” from every panel. Expect practical cabin design, BYD’s latest safety systems, and the company’s signature Blade Battery technology — all wrapped up in a contemporary look.

BYD Australia COO Stephen Collins is bullish about the new arrivals:

“When it comes to the ATTO range, start believing the hype. The ATTO 1 will open the door for even more Australians to get behind the wheel of their own new energy vehicle.”

Then, early in 2026, the family-friendly reinforcements arrive. The SEALION 5 will bring BYD’s clever dual-mode intelligent (DM-i) hybrid tech to a mid-sized SUV, blending electric efficiency with the reassurance of petrol backup. Positioned for buyers who want all the bells and whistles without a Tesla-level price tag, it promises value, comfort, and capability in equal measure.

Sitting above it, the SEALION 8 takes things large — a seven-seat plug-in hybrid SUV designed for growing families who refuse to sacrifice style or sanity. Expect a bold new exterior, premium interior finishes, and the sort of roomy, tech-packed cabin that keeps everyone calm on long trips.

Collins added:

“To release this volume of product at such a rapid pace is really unprecedented in my time in the automotive industry. Our growing mix of PHEVs and pure EVs proves BYD is serious about giving Australians real choice in starting – or continuing – their new energy journey.”

With the SHARK 6, SEALION 6, SEALION 7, DOLPHIN, SEAL, and ATTO 3 already here, BYD’s local portfolio now spans from compact hatches to full-size SUVs — and soon, there’ll be something for every budget, every garage, and every glittering GayCarBoys driveway.
