Australia’s SUV market is set to expand in early 2025 as Jaecoo, another new Chinese contender in the field, rolls out its mid-sized J7. Positioned as a versatile, tech-forward SUV, the J7 is Jaecoo’s first model to hit the Australian market, with the company promising a blend of “classic meets modern” design to appeal to drivers with a taste for the outdoors and urban style alike.
The J7 has a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine producing an adequate 137 kW and 275 Nm, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Available in both two-wheel and all-wheel drive, Jaecoo’s new model is built with light off-roading in mind, and has seven selectable drive modes. The company claims J7 has versatility and features designed for comfort and performance, but will it stand out in the competitive SUV landscape? Like most of the Chinese brands, the product is coming to market at a price point established mastheads can’t match.

J7’s spacious cabin comes with a large, vertically mounted 14.8-inch touchscreen as the hub for a wide array of tech and comfort features. Features include wireless charging, an electric tailgate, a 360-degree camera, and LED headlamps. With 19-inch alloy wheels and red brake calipers look relatively sporty as, Jaecoo’s J7 captures buyers looking for an SUV that has the gear, the style, and the functionality, but doesn’t cost a bomb. The brand’s CEO, Lewis Lu, shared that the J7 embodies Jaecoo’s philosophy of blending classic aesthetics with advanced technology, aiming to create an SUV that’s both “sophisticated and ready for adventure.” That’s marketing speak for, “we’re building cars to a price.”
Hot on the heels of the J7, Jaecoo’s compact J5 model will also join the market. First revealed at the International User Summit in China, the J5 offers a smaller, urban-friendly option in Jaecoo’s lineup but with features that keep comfort and practicality at the forefront. It includes a 13.2-inch touchscreen, a best-in-class 1.45 m² sunroof, and, in a quirky twist, dedicated “human-pet travel” seats designed for those who drive with furry passengers in tow. The bold design continues on the outside, with a prominent grille, slim headlights, and a streamlined rear light bar.
While Jaecoo has kept local pricing and some specifications under wraps, further details are expected closer to the launch date in Q1 2025. With a design and feature set targeting adventurous price-conscious comfort-seekers, Jaecoo’s models could find their niche in Australia’s ever-expanding SUV market.
