FIRST DRIVE: 2025 Zeekr X – Electric, Exotic, and Extra

There’s a new EV on the scene and she’s not here to blend in. The 2025 Zeekr X has landed in Australia with designer looks, lush interiors, and enough theatre to host opening night at the Opera House. Built on the same platform as Volvo and Polestar, this electric SUV is compact, curvy, and unapologetically cool.

Design – Tiny Footprint, Big Entrance

At just 4.4 metres long, the Zeekr X squeezes into the city like a fashion blogger into size-28 jeans. The frameless doors, two-tone colour schemes, and glitzy 20” wheels give it real kerbside appeal. It’s Scandinavian minimalism meets K-pop energy—unexpected but very welcome.

Inside? Darling, it’s lush. Vegan leather, multi-tone palettes (we loved the Mulberry/Rose), floating touchscreens, and a panoramic glass roof that turns your commute into a light therapy session. The materials feel premium, and the quirky details—like the screen that slides across to the passenger side in Theatre Mode—keep things interesting.

Bowral Bound – Zeekr in the Wild

To really test her mettle, we packed the crew and headed south for a cheeky 2-day mid-week trip to Bowral. That’s right—cakes, antiques, garden strolls, and a lot of side-eye from well-heeled locals who weren’t ready for our electric arrival.

On the freeway, the Zeekr X cruised like a limo—silent, composed, and confident. We played DJ Raffy’s playlist through the 13-speaker Yamaha audio system, which made Kylie sound like she was performing live in the boot. The AWD’s 3.8-second 0-100km/h sprint made overtaking a joy (and possibly illegal, depending on interpretation). Around town, the tight turning circle and featherlight steering made her easy to manoeuvre—even through a carpark full of Range Rovers. Automated parking is a faff so we’ll give it another few tries.

We made it to Bowral and back on a single charge with range to spare. Charging anxiety? Zero. Road trip credibility? Full marks. Although the return to sydney would leave around 25% we topped up to 80% anyway. The top up was $15.

Performance – Spicy Yet Civilised

The AWD model delivers 315kW and 543Nm, with a dual-motor setup that feels hot-hatch quick. For those who prefer a calmer ride, the RWD version still offers a healthy 200kW and 343Nm, with a longer range of 540km (WLTP). Either way, the Zeekr X is no slouch.

Charging is quick enough: 10–80% in under 30 minutes on 150kW DC, or overnight at home with the free 7kW charger included in the pre-order package (plus 12 months unlimited public charging).

Tech – Drama and Delight

There’s no shortage of gadgets:

14.6” touchscreen with a party trick—sliding across to the passenger side in Theatre Mode.
24.3” AR head-up display (AWD only).
Facial recognition login.
Voice assistant.
Pet Mode, Camping Mode, Parking Memory.
Remote climate control and 5G connectivity.

And yes, wireless Apple CarPlay works beautifully—even when Raffy tries to hijack it with a TikTok playlist mid-drive.

Safety – All the Bells and Whistles

Loaded with seven airbags, adaptive cruise, lane centring, AEB, 360° cameras, and auto park. There’s even a built-in dashcam and a facial recognition system that adjusts your profile when you jump in. She knows who you are—and she will judge you.

Value – Luxe for Less

Prices are sharp:

RWD from $56,900 driveaway.
AWD from $64,900 driveaway.

Add the $4,000 Convenience Pack for heated/ventilated seats, HUD, and extra driver assists. Worth it? Yes. In fact, if you skipped that pack, we’d be concerned.

Final Thoughts – Electrifying Personality

The Zeekr X is bold, fast, and loaded with flair. It turned heads in Bowral and made every kilometre feel special, from peak-hour traffic to country lane meandering. With slick design, smart tech, and that soundtrack-worthy Yamaha system, it’s more than just another EV—it’s a statement.

It is up against heavy hitters like Tesla Model Y which has just had both a major makeover and a price reduction putting it squarely within the XEEKR X price range. Model Y is larger but it has no performance model s yet.

If you want an electric SUV that feels exciting, original, and a little bit fabulous, Zeekr X might just be your next automotive crush.
