GAC has dropped the Australian specs for its sharply styled, tech-stuffed EMZOOM — a compact SUV with enough attitude to make the school run feel like a runway strut. Set to arrive in a single luxury trim, it’s been shaped by GAC’s global design team to stand out in a segment where everyone’s screaming for attention. Inside and out it is another Chinese model that takes on the existing mastheads and beats them at their own game.
First impressions? The EMZOOM isn’t shy. A “Mecha Wing” grille, Laser Eye split LEDs, and a “Light Dart” tail-light signature give it the kind of futuristic drama usually reserved for sci-fi villains and drunk drag queens. All those razor-cut lines look like a Liz Taylor’s diamond took a swipe at the bodywork.
Inside, things get even more extra (he said excitedly). A 14.6-inch LED screen handles everything from seat ventilation to disco-worthy ambient lighting. There’s wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a six-speaker DTS audio setup, and 50W wireless charging. Even the panoramic roof and climate controls are one-touch, so you’re not poking around like a lost tourist.

Daily usability gets a boost thanks to a powered tailgate, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic LED headlights. GAC also likes to remind us they’ve topped J.D. Power’s Chinese IQS for eight years, which explains the surprisingly polished fit and finish.
Power comes from a modest 125kW/270Nm, Euro 5, 1.5L turbo petrol engine through a 7-speed wet dual clutch capable of 0.2-second shifts. It offers a reasonable 6.6L/100km WLTP with ECO, COMFORT and SPORT modes — something for everyone’s mood. In a market now seeing new entries every lunch break, it is going to need to be special to stand out.
Safety? Oodles! There are Six airbags, and a liberal splash of cool features like 360° parking, AEB, blind-spot warning, adaptive cruise, all wrapped in a body made of nearly 60% high-strength steel. In short, GAC is aiming make EMZOOM a flashy, high-tech pitch to everyday Aussies wanting a bit of glamour with their groceries. Some will see it that way, others might be a little confused, until they see the prices which are sure to be just another knife in the backs of complacent legacy brands.
