GWM plans 14 new and updated model launches in 2027, including a new brand. GWM Wey is the premium label, aimed at buyers of BYD’s Denza and Geely’s Zeekr, and will be sold from the same dealerships as every Haval and Cannon.
Wey joins Haval, Tank, Ora, and Cannon, all sold under the GWM banner. Unlike other umbrella brands who have a separate network for each, there won’t be a separate GWM Wey network. “We insist on ‘one GWM’,” said Managing Director Andrew Gao. “Our strategy is different… We will not have five or six or seven or 10 networks. No.”
That line is aimed at Chery and its Chery, Omoda, Jaecoo, and Lepas brands, where there are even more brands promised. Chinese brands aren’t alone in that though. Volkswagen and Stellantis each have a host of sub brands.
Steve Maciver, GWM Head of Communications and Marketing, said the company is “trying to base everything around a structure which is GWM.” He added, “We’re trying to build an identity and a role to each of those sub brands which makes sense, gives us delineation, but also connects back to GWM. And there’s still some work to be done on that.”
ABOVE: GWM Haval H7, Ora 5, and Cannon
GWM sold 49,376 cars in the year to the end of October, up 12.8%. October alone was 4,417, down 0.3%. Chief Operating Officer John Kett named a top 5 finish by 2027 as the target at the 250,000th sale. To get there, GWM has to pass Mazda on 64,595 and Hyundai on 60,580. BYD did it in one year. It finished 2025 eighth, and it’s second for 2026 so far on 86,639, behind only Toyota. Mazda was second behind Toyota for years. It slipped to third in 2025, and it’s fifth now, down 16.5%. The legacy brands are falling like dominoes, Toyota down 13.9% for the year and Ford down 12.8%.
“Regardless of who we’re taking [market] share from, if we want to become the top-five and then the top-three brand that we aspire to be, we’re going to have to take share from those above us,” Maciver said. “We’re not targeting domination in any one segment. We think we’ve got a chance to take much more share in many segments.”
Maciver added, “If you think about medium SUV and you think about dual-cab ute, if we want to be, ultimately, a top-three brand… driving share in those two segments is absolutely crucial.” GWM’s dual-cab is the Cannon, and the range includes the Cannon Hi4-T plug-in hybrid.
“We think we’ve got the right weapons, the right value, and the right tech to deliver volume there. But that’s on us,” Maciver said. “We haven’t delivered and realised that volume yet, and that’s one of the big tasks for us for next year.”
GWM Wey Starts With the G9 People Mover
The first Wey model is likely to be the Wey G9, a people mover that goes up against Denza D9 and Xpeng X9. SUVs follow G9.
Wey G9 is already approved for sale in 2 forms. The plug-in hybrid uses a 1.5-litre turbo and 2 electric motors for 325kW, with all-wheel drive. The hybrid has 263kW and is also AWD, with prices to follow.
Wey V9X SUV is expected next, with timing to be advised. It is big, at 5.3m long, with 6 seats in a 2+2+2 layout, and it’s a plug-in hybrid with a 2.0-litre turbo, and the top versions have 800V. It’s built to move passengers in top-level comfort. The V9X went on sale in China in 2026, and a full EV version is filed there.
800V on a Plug-in Hybrid Is a Game Changer
Plug-in hybrids are still best for owners who can charge overnight at home. Most get a small battery and slow charging, so a long trip ends up on petrol.
Wey V9X’s biggest battery is 80kWh, more than three times the 22.7kWh in a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. On the 800V versions it charges at up to 490kW, 30-80% in 9 minutes.
A battery that size suggests a new way of using the car. In the city it’s an EV. On a long drive it can stop to charge but doesn’t have to, and when it does stop, it can fill up with both petrol and power.
Zeekr 9X, a Geely plug-in hybrid sold in China, has 900V and charges 10-80% in about 9.5 minutes.
Trying to follow the reasoning behind drivelines has become a pub sport. One thing is certain though, legacy brand innovation seems very tired by comparison.
Five Mid-Size SUVs and a Bigger Haval
GWM is set to add a large 7-seat SUV, probably Haval H10. Maciver called it “very appealing” as a prospect. Haval H7 also has 7 seats, but it’s a mid-size SUV, and it drew 1,500 expressions of interest.
The Ora range grows with the Ora 5 platform. A larger SUV is confirmed as the Ora 5 Plus, and a smaller hatch may join it.
Haval Jolion Max is a new mid-size SUV at the small end of the class, offered as an EV or a plug-in hybrid. Jolion Max and Ora 5 Plus are both due in the first quarter of 2027. From 2027, GWM will have 5 mid-size SUVs in its range.
