Toyota rarely puts a foot wrong, but even amongst that much garnered success the GR range is a stroke of genius. With the gluing on of a single badge, modest modes of motor-vation have been elevated to god status, including humble Corolla.

Since 2023, around 1,000 units have been sold with a current wait time around 3 months. Early buys swapped hands for way above the RRP such was the lust for this little piece of automotive Eden.

But, GR Corolla isn’t all fur coat and no knickers, oh no. It has only a passing acquaintance with the donor car and is is backed by racing technology and rally knowhow. The flirty little package has just been boosted, as if it needed boosting.

Late in 2024 the revised 2025 GR Corolla lands with more torque and a fabulous racing automatic. Unbelievable as it is, many enthusiasts prefer a self-shifter for one reason or another, and the brand new eight-speed GAZOO Racing direct automatic transmission (DAT) is designed for high-performance shifting on the track. It joins an upgraded turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder engine.

The 221kw/400Nm engine is up 30Nm on the current car, and is mated to the GR FOUR all-wheel drive system for the vicious grip GR Corolla is known for.

Further changes include a new bumper for better cooling and aerodynamics, and the retuning of the front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link suspension.

The cabin retains the current state of grace for which we are all very grateful.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the addition of an automatic option for the GR Corolla would further enhance the appeal of this race-bred hot hatch.

“When we first launched the GR Corolla here in 2023, it was an immediate hit with driving enthusiasts combining the performance of a track-day car derived from our TOYOTA GAZOO Racing motorsport experience with the practicality of a five-door hatch,” Mr Hanley said.

GR Corolla is one of those cars that started life as an instant classic and the addition of an automatic will open its doors to even more buyers.

Those who don’t ever get to drive one will still look on GR Corolla with envy.
