Yes ladies and germs, Ford Maverick is a hybrid, in fact, the very 1st hybrid pick up truck.

Americans eh! They call this truck a “compact truck,” as if any truck can be called compact. The 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder hybrid drivetrain does 40mpg and developes 191 horsepower and 55 lb.-ft. of torque. In what surely must be another first for pickup trucks, it has a CVT automatic power the front wheels.

Given Nissan’s CVT woes, this is a somewhat surprising move. CVTs are not what you first think of when you want to take a big fat load on board. There is so much there to unpack, that I can’t even begin to imagine the idiocy of that entire waste of time.

There’ll be gay DIYers everywhere cheering from over their martinis.

If you fancy a bit more dash for your cash, you can have a 2.0-liter EcoBoost®  with 250 horsepower and 277 lb.-ft. of torqueƗƗ mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and standard front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive.

For 4 grand you can get the towing pack that doubles the tow capacity to 4,000 pounds. I can’t imagine anyone daft enough to tow with a CVT, so the 8-speed auto sounds like the one people will go for.

You can choose from XL, XLT and Lariat. An FX4 package is available for all-wheel-drive XLT and Lariat which gives if better off-road cred. For the 1st year, you can grab the First Edition, which is a Lariat with decals, fancy paint, and a tonneau cover. It also gets off-road programming like Hill Descent, Mud/Rut, and Sand, just because.

If you find it unfathomable to be tackling dunes on a hybrid, you’re not alone. Given that all cars and trucks will have at least partial electric drivetrains, this seems like the way of the future.

The range starts at $19,995.
