Jaguar Land Rover is now offering enhanced navigation even in the most remote locations, using what3words global location technology via software-over-the-air (SOTA) updates.
what3words divided the world in to 3m x 3m squares, each with a what3words address. This the ‘always-on’ technology, doesn’t need a cell connection for backup, as many navigation services do. Following the update, drivers will be able to navigate to any precise location in the world using just three words.
This upgrade follows the previous update that gave 200,000 existing Jaguar Land Rover vehicles access to Amazon Alexa. Jaguar Land Rover has updated more than 1.3 million vehicle updates, and over three million engine control unit updates using the Over the Air system.
Once the upgrade is applied, the the Pivi Pro Infotainment system allows users to input what3words addresses directly into the navigation bar instead of typing the full address, if indeed there is an address. Drivers know that an address doesn’t always point you to exactly where you want to be. Indeed, remote locations may not even have an address.
HERE Technologies has been working in partnership with Jaguar Land Rover for the past 25 years. HERE’s end-to-end, connected driving services include turn-by-turn guidance, real-time traffic and on and off-street parking that enable a personalised experience, intuitively guiding drivers through their entire journey.

Chris Sheldrick, co-founder and CEO of what3words, said: “This partnership ensures you can get to the exact destination of your next adventure with ease and in comfort. Gino Ferru, General Manager EMEAR and Senior Vice President at HERE Technologies, said: “Over the years of working with Jaguar Land Rover, we have gained a deep understanding of their innovative thinking and technical requirements, thanks to which we have been able to build industry-leading navigation solutions.
