Mazda’s Large Product Group is a proud mother, with the birth the first-Ever Mazda CX-80. The large hybrid SUV was revealed in Europe, in a sign of what Mazda thinks is going to be the big attraction. Associating a model with Europe is designed to give spectators impressions before ever having laid eyes on it.

Mazda CX-80 should arrive in Australia sometime in late 2024. The big Mazda is almost five metres long and has a wheelbase of over three metres. The 3-row set-up has two-fold-flat third row seats, and a three-seat 2nd-row bench or two captain chairs with centre console.

The Mazda “Kodo” design is being stretched in more ways than mere size. Like many brands, the Mazda CX-80 will connect to the outside world through the Mazda Connected Services portal and the MyMazda app. The industry has been watching BMW as the German’s connected platform allows it to sell or rent the user extra services. It also also subscriptions to heated seats, heated steering wheels, and most ludicrously of all, rent wireless Apple CarPlay. Its worth noting that wired CarPlay isn’t available on models that have a wireless facility.

The new Trailer Hitch View uses advanced graphics already used to give surround view, to provide a more exacting position relative to a caravan or trailer. Useful when hitching especially for those not used to towing.

We drove the CX-90 recently, and while it looked the business, our team were universal in recognising that CX-9 was a better-looking car that was nicer to drive and cost many fewer shekels. Mazda’s continued “premiumisation” puts it in a price backet where competition is stiff. As with most Japanese carmakers, fully electric models are like unicorns, instead using the term “electrification” instead.

CX-80 will go on sale with three all-hybrid powertrains. The range-topping 241kW/500Nm e-Skyactiv PHEV comes with a 4-cylinder petrol engine and electric motor. There is no fully electric version, but the PHEV will run for a short time in EV only mode. The mild-hybrids use in-line 6-cylinder e-Skyactiv D diesel unit, or e-Skyactiv G petrol engines  with M Hybrid Boost 48V mild hybrid technology. CX-80 has an eight-speed automatic and i-Activ All-Wheel Drive. Mi-Drive has 4 drive modes, adding EV mode for the PHEV.

Suspension uses front double wishbone and rear multi-link which are already associated with superior ride and handling.

Safety and driver assistance come in the form of i-Activsense with:

  • Cruising & Traffic Support (CTS)
  • new Unresponsive Driver Support (also in upcoming CX-70)
  • Smart Brake Support (SBS) with new Head-on collision mitigation
  • Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK) with new Head-on traffic avoidance assist.
