Mazda has given the 2023 Mazda 3 a bit of lippy and a new handbag. In many ways, the Mazda Interior is one of the best in the business but a car maker is only as good as its current range. The passenger car segment continues to haemorrhage sales like jelly-filled colanders so yearly techy goodness has to be shoehorned in to remain relevant.
The Mazda3 powertrain choices are reduced to Skyactiv G 2.0 and 2.5-litre engines, with 6-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatics bolted on. It is a few cogs short of expectation, but at least there is no sign of the dreaded CVT automatic.
The Skyactiv G 2.0-litre petrol engine has cylinder deactivation. This, and a couple of combustion tweaks are said to lower CO2 emissions without losing performance. Fuel consumption is 5 per cent better, at 5.9 L/100km for the hatch and 5.8 L/100km for the sedan.
