The Japan Mobility Show bursts in to life in the country’s pink-petalled capital, Tokyo, later this month. Nissan plans to digitally reveal a raft of all-electric concept vehicles, and leading the charge will be the Nissan Hyper Urban. While a drive of the real thing trumps a visualisation every time, the in-your-face EV cracks the curtains on the vault of vision. It is where Nissan design is headed, carrying with it, a sense of the dramatic.
Rather like the 12 days of Christmas, the series of concepts will pop from Nissan’s advent calendar one by one. It will continue right up to the show’s press day on October 25, and leads off with the mysteriously titled, “”Nissan Hyper Urban.
The word “Hyper,” might lead you to think the concept car streaks the streets at warp 9.99, cornering on rails, and arriving almost before it left, but no. Instead, “hyper” has been used to signify the amount of “hype” whipped up by the PR and ad teams. While that particular moniker might seem a little off-beat, the idea that buyers can tread lightly on the planet while having fun is something that appeals to all.
In true Japanese fashion, every concept is represented by a symbolic character and has custom-tailored features that add value to unique lifestyles and diverse aspirations. In other words, a concept for every taste and desire.
Nissan’s vision for the Japan Mobility Show demonstrates how Nissan and its offerings can makes people’s lives better. But, there’s more: new technologies show how the EVs can create a better future, or at least, be part of it.
The digital debut displayed the indomitable “Urban Concept” at Nissan’s shiny new vehicle design hall at the Nissan Technical Center in Atsugi, Kanagawa.

There are grand claims: “The Nissan Hyper Urban: Empowering a cleaner world”
Is that a reality, or merely marketing mojo?
There are so many catchwords that are intended to endow the subject with instant gravitas, none more than “urban- and suburban-based professionals “. These target users are charged with valuing environmental sustainability over many other things. Perhaps they do, so what does this user get?
They get a concept that makes a bold statement, yet blends into the environment. We’re not sure what environment Nissan designers think the Hyper Urban blends in to, but we’d love to find out.
Nissan Hyper Urban is intended to be integrated wholly into the EV ecosystem, with its V2H having the ability to run the user’s home if needed. Power failures would be a thing of the past. Every EV is a mobile battery, yet few car makers exploit it. You could buy power when it is cheap, and use it when power costs more.
Not only that, the V2G capability allows owners to send surplus power to the grid to support their local community and earn money in the process. The Intelligent Charging Management System features AI that can autonomously charge vehicles and power buildings, providing efficient management of power.
The genius here is that the car could be a long-term proposition with both hardware and regular software updates to give the EV a fresh feel. It may, for example, have an interior that can be tarted up with a new instrument panel which brings with it all the bells and whistles. It would look and feel like a brand new car.
More cutting edge technology lurks within the exterior’s lime yellow body which changes chromatic expressions depending on the angle that light hits it. The play of light is reminiscent of a post-modern sculpture in a garden of gorgeousness, again highlighting an organic element to the EV. There is more than a touch of drama with both front and rear scissor doors. The silhouette is designed for aerodynamic excellence, making the EV slip through the air like a nuclear-powered paper dart. Folding paper is something the Japanese are famous for, and the the Urban Concept could easily have been fashioned by an Origami grand master.
Gay buyers are early adopters, let’s face it. They will be beside themseves.
The interior take cues from kaleidoscopic triangles, and the instrument panel and display can be customised to suit the occupant’s whims and moods. Rather sexily, the front seats can origamni themselves into the back seats, making a Zen-likes sofa for quiet contemplation.
It is more than just talk; an owner could park the Nissan Hyper Urban inside a loft apartment or bungalow to become part of the living space. As George jetson as it sounds, all great products started as an ember, fanned to a blaze by genius.
