While many of the Chinese brands are zipping up the top ten charts selling on low price alone, Zeekr has positioned itself as a global premium electric mobility brand.

The first 2 cars off the rank are Zeekr X, followed by Zeekr 009, a pure-electric luxury MPV, before the end of 2024.

Zeekr created subsidiary in Australia to develop a franchise dealership distribution model. Zeekr X buyers can pre-order in September, but the company has already been gathering expressions of interest on their global website.

Zeekr sponsors the SXSW festival in Sydney, and will launch Zeekr officially at the October festival. ZEEKR anticipates deliveries to commence soon after launch.

Connal Yan, Managing Director of Zeekr Australia, commented: “Zeekr’s expansion into the Australian market brings our innovative and cutting-edge electric vehicles to a new audience, offering a unique driving experience that blends style, performance, and sustainability. By selecting SXSW Sydney as the stage for our launch, Zeekr is demonstrating its commitment to innovation, showcasing our products to a global audience, and setting the foundation for a future of limitless possibilities in sustainable mobility.”

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you will have already heard of Zeekr. It is a subsidiary of Geely, headquartered in Zhejiang, China. Geely brands include Geely Auto, Lynk & Co, Zeekr, Volvo Cars, Polestar, Lotus Cars, London Electric Vehicle Company, Cao Cao Mobility, and aerospace technology company Geespace.

Zeekr X in more detail

Zeekr X is the brand’s initial offering in the local market. It uses the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), which the company claims offers excellent range, fast charging and a modern design. ZEEKR also claims the ZEEKR X is an excellent drive in the premium segment, but it has stiff competition, not the least being from market leader TESLA.

The looks are somewhere between Volvo XC40 and Tesla Model Y, but more interesting than either.

Zeekr X uses proprietary electric motor and battery technology which packs a punch on the road. A 66kWh lithium-ion under-floor battery increases interior space and lower the vehicle’s centre of gravity, common with most EVs that use a platform specifically built for electric motoring.

XEEKR X has a lithium-ion battery with nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) cells from CATL, has eight-year/160,000 km warranty, and will be recycled once no longer serviceable.

The 66kWh lithium-ion battery has 540km of range (ADR 81/02) in the single motor, rear-wheel drive standard model with power consumption of 13.9 kWh/100km. Maximum charging is 150kW DC which will get from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes. The on-board 7.2kW AC charger gets a full charge from empty in around 7 hrs.  (NOTE: RWD model 7.2kW, AWD model 11kW)

The Zeekr X’s has 5G connectivity and a Qualcomm 8155 chip.  On-board computing power is said to be impressive, using over-the-air software updates to install new features without visits to the dealer.

There is Zeekr Voice Assistant that uses natural voice commands and AI to control navigation, climate, and media playback without the driver’s hands leaving the wheel.

While parked the occupants can use Theatre Mode, where seats automatically adjust into the ideal position for enjoying music.  As seen in Tesla, Pet Mode uses climate control system while displaying a friendly message so that passers-by don’t try to free the contented pooch.

Sentry Mode can be used when Zeekr X is parked and locked. Sensors monitor the perimeter and record video of miscreants should they attempt something untoward. The driver can access the recordings stored in the car’s on-board storage or on a USB flash drive plugged into the USB interface.
