Move over, Tesla and the Euro elite—there’s a new luxury EV player rolling into town. IM Presented by MG Motor is making its Australian debut, promising a mix of cutting-edge tech, high performance, and premium finishes. The brand, already gaining traction in China and Thailand, will hit our shores in style at the Melbourne Motor Show in April.

For the uninitiated, IM Motors is a joint venture between Chinese auto giant SAIC Motor and tech powerhouse Alibaba. The name stands for “Intelligence in Motion,” which is a fancy way of saying they’re crammed with the latest in automotive tech. IM promises to blend smart mobility with sleek design, boasting AI-driven features and top-tier luxury appointments. But will they shake up the luxury EV space, or are they just another flashy newcomer? That’s the million-dollar question.

MG Motor Australia, which has been riding high on its EV success with the MG4 and Cyberster, sees this as the next logical step. CEO Peter Ciao calls it “the future of premium electric mobility,” and with two models—the IM5 sedan (known as the IM L6 in China) and the IM6 SUV (IM LS6 abroad)—they’re aiming straight at the top end of the market. The IM5 is expected to go head-to-head with the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4, while the IM6 will likely take on the likes of the Polestar 3 and Mercedes EQE SUV.

MG’s Chief Operating Officer, Giles Belcher, highlights the company’s growing EV lineup, from the best-selling MG4 to the upcoming MG S5 EV. The addition of IM models now gives MG a luxury offering to tempt Aussies looking for something different from the usual suspects. The move also marks MG’s ambition to cover all bases, from budget-friendly EVs to high-end luxury models.

So, what do we know about the IM5 and IM6? Not much yet in terms of Australian specs, but globally, these cars boast serious tech, decent range, and a sleek design that should turn heads. Reports from overseas indicate the IM5 sedan could feature a dual-motor setup producing over 400kW, with a 0-100km/h time of around 3.5 seconds. The IM6 SUV, on the other hand, is expected to offer a mix of long-range capability and performance, with an anticipated range exceeding 600km on a single charge. Both models will feature ultra-fast charging, voice-controlled AI, and high-end materials inside, putting them firmly in the premium category.

Pricing, local specs, and exact arrival dates remain a mystery, but expect more details to drop soon. With China’s rapid advancements in EV technology, MG’s move into the premium segment is an interesting one. Whether IM can truly take on the likes of BMW, Mercedes, and Tesla remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure—the luxury EV game just got a new contender, and it’s coming in hot.
