Polestar has morphed from being the performance arm of Volvo to an electric vehicle maker of sleek, chic, well-equipped carriages. Polestar signed an understanding with South Korea’s battery manufacturer, SK, to provide battery cell modules for their new Polestar 5 electric 4-door GT.

Polestar 2 is now a common sight in capital cities in Australia, and Polestar 3 is on its way.

Apart from private use, Polestar 2 can be booked as an UBER ride, demonstrating how far EVs have come in a short time in Australia. It shows what can happen once the vested interests of fossil fuel investors are not put ahead of the environment and the buying public.

Charging infrastructure will become more ubiquitous, and as it does, it will charge new batteries faster. That will cut charging times, and thus, wait times. Battery technology is making huge leaps and carmakers are keen to take advantage of the very best.

There are many reasons to choose a battery supplier, chief among them is quality and range. SK battery cell technology allows fast charging, efficient discharging and excellent range. The high-nickel battery cell modules have ultra-long 56 cm cells with high energy density.

Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO, says: “Our relationship with SK On has been fruitful following our initial MOU and their investment in our brand. Polestar 5 is developing at pace and will feature this high-capacity battery to provide the performance expected of our grand tourer.”

Jee Dong-seob, CEO of SK On, says: “We are delighted to collaborate with Polestar on its top-tier EV model. We will solidify our partnership with Polestar and create new opportunities through this agreement.”

Polestar 5 is scheduled for manufacture to begin in 2025, and started life at the Polestar Precept concept car as seen in the YouTube documentary series, “From Concept to Car”, which details its journey to reality.
