Subaru of America has issued a country-wide recall of 118,723 SUVs vehicles in the U.S. over an issue which prevents air bags from deploying in a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Wednesday.
The recall covers certain Outback and Legacy models produced between 2020 and 2022.
Airbags are now required to achieve the maximum safety ratings but are only able to be used once, and are useless if they fail to deploy correctly. This follows a worldwide call of many brands when Takata airbags were likely to explode if the propellant became adulterated. The unit became more like a bomb, shattering to cause desperate injuries and death.

“A capacitor in the sensors for the Occupant Detection System (ODS) may crack and short circuit, which can prevent the front passenger air bag from deploying in a crash,” the NHTSA said.
Dealers will replace the ODS sensors on the front passenger seat to remedy the issue for free.
