Tesla has given its popular Model Y a significant makeover (codenamed Juniper), bringing a raft of design, comfort, and tech upgrades that make it quieter, more efficient, and more stylish. And yes, there’s a hint of Cybertruck in its new look.
It follows Model 3 MY24, codenamed Project Highland released for the model year 24. Although both model range updates are significant, neither can be considered “all-new”.
A Fresh Look with Cyber Vibes
The new Model Y embraces bold design cues, including a cross-car daytime running lightbar, repositioned pixel LED headlights, and a futuristic front bumper. The rear now features an eye-catching, single-piece lightbar spanning 1.6 metres—one of the largest in the industry. Tesla fans will also notice a front-facing camera for enhanced visibility.
Upgraded Interior for Ultimate Comfort
Inside, Tesla has focused on refinement. The new ventilated seats, soft-touch materials, and an advanced acoustic glass windshield ensure a whisper-quiet ride. The panoramic glass roof now includes a silver-coated layer that reflects heat more effectively, keeping the cabin cooler without cranking up the air con. A magnetic cargo cover adds a touch of practicality, stowing neatly when not in use.
The Juniper update brings many of the Model 3’s Highland attributes while adding features unique to Model y.
Smoother, Quieter Ride
Tesla promises a more comfortable drive thanks to an overhauled suspension setup that improves bump absorption. Road, impact, and wind noise are reportedly reduced by over 20%, bringing the Model Y in to line with the MY24 Model 3.

Smarter and Safer Tech
The Model Y retains its reputation for safety, adding a new front blind spot camera and seamless blind-spot indicators. The latest Autopilot HW4.0 hardware continues Tesla’s claimed push towards autonomous driving. Adaptive pixel high-beam headlights automatically adjust brightness to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic.
Tesla’s 24/7 Tyre Assistance
Tesla is expanding its roadside support with mobile tyre repair services and a loaner wheel program, to compensate for the lack of an onboard spare wheel.
Tesla own and operate a Mobile Tyre Repair van for customers, covering:
Puncture repair: A Tesla technician will come directly to a customer’s location and
perform a puncture repair on the spot.
Tyre replacement: if necessary, a mobile technician can facilitate a tyre replacement
on the spot.
Tesla loaner wheel: If a repair isn’t possible roadside, a Tesla technician or Tesla
roadside partner will fit a Tesla loaner wheel and take the damaged one to the nearest
Tesla Service Centre for it to be assessed, allowing customers to continue your journey
without interruption.
The Tesla loaner wheel program is available 24/7 via our network of Tesla roadside
partners. Access to the loaner wheel program is by contacting Roadside Assistance via
the Tesla App, support is available 24/7 and 365 days a year.
SUPERCHARGING Warranty and Supercharging
The Model Y’s battery and drive unit come with up to an 8-year/192,000 km warranty, while Tesla’s Supercharging network continues to grow, offering rapid charging with up to 282 km of range in 15 minutes.
TESLA WARRANTY

- 4 years or 80,000 km, whichever comes first.
Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty
- Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive:
o 8 years or 160,000 km, whichever comes first, with minimum 70% retention of Battery capacity over the warranty period

o 8 years or 192,000 km, whichever comes first, with minimum 70% retention of Battery capacity over the warranty period
Conclusion
Tesla’s updated Model Y is a clear step forward in efficiency, comfort, and style for what is an aging model range. Competition is stiff from both legacy and new brands with some significantly undercutting Tesla Model Y price and ability.
The front end in particular, gives the Model Y further points of difference when compared to Model 3. Prior to the MY24 update Model 3 and Model Y were virtually identical to the average punter.
The warranty of 4 years is 3 years less than industry leaders which include 7 year pioneer, Kia, and many of the Chinese brands which also support 7 year warranties. Other brands offer conditional 10 year warranties if serviced within the brand’s service network.
Tesla withdrew Model X and Model S from RHD markets, and recently announced Cybertruck. Recent sales of all Tesla vehicles has fallen dramatically with many attributing this to a boycott by buyers. CEO Elon Musk has polarised the public, and sadly, the Tesla brand with it.
Tesla was a pioneer, making electric vehicles “cool”, but there is now a vast array of alternatives in all price brackets and with more technology. A recent viral video showed vehicles with LIDAR were significantly better at detecting objects ahead in all light and weather conditions. Tesla deactivated LIDAR in their vehicles as part of a shift to all-camera safety and driver-assistance features.
Competition comes from the Hyundai group, including Kia, as well as a raft of Chinese brands including Zeekr, Xpeng, and MG. There are a range of high end EVs from Rolls Royce, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Jaguar Land Rover too, and gradually non-Tesla brands are gaining access to the Supercharger network, albeit at an inflated price.
With the shifting mood around Tesla, can the pioneering brand do enough to refresh its range? What the brand needs is all-new models to replace thise that are up to 14 years old.
