OK, you’ve decided you want to join the SUV brigade.
There are many different types of gay gals ‘n guys, so the car/SUV tastes are as varied as the sparkles on a Mardi Gras frock.
Before you get on your high horse about the omission of the venerable Jeep Renegade, get over it. While it might be great off-road, it will only be great for a short while. Jeep has the reliability of a drunken queen at a dance party. Don’t do it if you want to go out, and return home in the one trip.
To further water down your cocktail, Renegade has a disgraceful 1 Star safety rating. It might look the business, but just don’t do it.
Now we have that out of the way, we’ve compiled a list of our favourite SUVs from 2019, for all budgets, and all tastes. If you can’t find something here, you’re dead.
Here is our top 15 as voted by you, in no particular order.
15 BMW X30i
If you’re posh, and love a badge, BMW is perfect. X-drive add AWD cred to an SUV many can’t see the point to. I love it, for all its driving pleasure.
Jaguar is as posh as you please. If you own a country pile, Jaguar now does a nice line in battery-powered SUVs. It is the new uber-cruiser for those who think Tesla is a bit last year.
It’s big, it’s bold, it’s butch, meet Toyota’s venerable Landcruiser mega-barge. You can go anywhere you like, taking as much crap as you can cram into it.
12 LEXUS UX
LEXUS UX is the Japanese carmaker’s latest SUV offering. The pint-size off-roader brings class and versatility back to the leafy eastern suburbs. There is an electric version too, if only a hybrid drive.
BMW X2 is handsome. Think of is as a hot hatch for those with more dollars than cents.
10 Honda CR-V
CR-V has been around for ages and is one of Honda’s best sellers. Justly so, it does exactly what it says on the box.
Prado is an oldie but a goodie. It give buyers an option if they don’t want to go the full Monty on the full-size Landcruiser.
8 Range Rover Sport HSE P400 Hybrid
Who doesn’t love a Range Rover. Now they’re doing Hybrid, there’s no reason to ever hear, “ compu-a says NOOOOOOO”.
Not as big as CX-8, or the enormous CX-9, CX-5 is most things to most people. If you want to blend in, this is for you.
Citroen is the brand for those who want something unusual. They are rare, very rare, and that says, “buy me,” to anyone who wants to be different.
Tucson is superb on the road, has a great warranty, and oodles of tech. Get into it!
RAV4 comes in a Hybrid, but EDGE is the ticket if you don’t carte for batteries.
VW must be mad selling this thing at this price. It is stunning on the road, crammed full of gear, and is every bit as posh as a Merc or Audi.
Toyota Kluger is for the family. If you and yours have a couple of kids, and the in-laws come to visit, Kluger gets the job done in relative comfort.
CX-9 is probably the best value, classiest SUV this side of 100 grand.
