Car Sales Rebound with Astonishing Speed

It is no secret that 2020 was devastated by Covid. Every industry has been strip-mined, but the car sales rebound for 2021 is in full swing. It is moderated by supply issues as shutdowns have caused chaos, but the feared Armageddon has failed to eventuate.

In fact, years of continual decline appear to have been reversed.

The biggest winner has been the rise and rise of Chinese car maker, MG. Toyota is still number 1, selling more than the next two combined.

Year to date sales have increases over this time last year by around 16.1%

1 Toyota             136,596 21.0%

2 Mazda             69,365 10.6%

3 Hyundai          43,696 6.7%

4 Ford                 43,452 6.7% 32,224

5 Kia                   43,096 6.6%

6 Mitsubishi       42,745 6.6%

7 Nissan             26,673 4.1%

8 Volkswagen    24,731 3.8%

9 MG                  22,857 3.5%

10 Subaru          22,469 3.4%

Passenger cars continue their slow march to oblivion with a fall of 3.1% for July. SUV sales rose by 15% with 5,467.

The figures are slightly skewed by the fact that all the rental cars sold during the first Covid strike, are now being replaced. Lockdowns still periodically limit travel, but cars remain the best way to travel as the public avoids mass transport like the plague, pun intended.

It was only a few years ago that the industry reported that SUV sales had overtaken passenger cars for the first time. If you add in LCVs such as Hilux and Amorok SUV/LCV (488963), now outnumber passenger cars (138,406) by more than 3 to 1.

  9. Mitsubishi Outlander 1792/ 989
  10. MG ZS 1786/ 327

It is worth noting that used car prices have increased too, so the next 12 months promises to provide many more surprises.
