Long time friends, Scott and Corey, love gadgets and lusted after a Tesla Model 3. The bought themselves a shiny blue Model 3 which performed well, until it didn’t.

Even though regular OTA updates kept the Model 3 in the latest software release, it recently developed a fault, a big one.

The more complex are car becomes, the less it takes to disable it.

Big ticket items such as a transmission or engine fault will disable an ICE vehicle.

Any vehicle with a broken sensor might cause false alerts or unexpected semi-autonomous events. Imagine an AEB sensor not working when it should have spotted a pedestrian, or worse still depolys full braking at highway speeds.

A recent Toyota recall addresses motor failures in the smart high beam, something that would render the car unroadworthy. While annoying, it wouldn’t disable the car. A previous recall replaced fuel pumps likely to give out after 10,000kms of use. A failure would stop the engine completely.

Electric cars suffer similar issues.

In this case, Tesla stories emerge of a flat 12v battery trapping tesla owners inside their cars.

A child was trapped inside a rented Model Y, and a male driver was unable to exit his Tesla for the same reason, a flat battery.

Scott and Corey had a few minor issues until the Model 3 refused to charge.

It wasn’t clear exactly what caused the malfunction, but since the replacement of the main battery was under warranty, no explanation was offered by Tesla. During the exchange process, the service department determined that the sensor in the seat, and bubbling steering wheel covering meant a new wheel had to be ordered. A new steering wheel at 3.5 years old? It has been garaged for most of its life.

While failing to charge is inconvenient, a failed seat sensor would prevent the Model 3 from being operated as the car starts when a driver is detected. Furthermore, a bubbling steering wheel feels like 70’s plastic rearing its ugly head.

Move forward a few months-

The decision to replace the Tesla Model 3 offered up a mountain of obsessive research. Several options arose, a MY24 Model 3 and Model Y among them. While other brands were considered briefly, the couple chose a Polestar 4 even before a test drive could be organised.

Part of the reason was an increase in space and a cornucopia of tasty gadgets. There are driver instruments and a head-up display, with CarPlay as standard. The drive compares favourably despite going from the dual motor MY21 Model 3 to the rear motor Polestar 4

In the end, the main reason for tesla’s exclusion from the final consideration was the behaviour of Tesla’s erratic figure head. Musk’s politics and rampant pursuit of wealth and power are in contrast the husband and husband team’s view of the world.

Although Polestar 4 costs more, it is considered to be of vastly better quality, an improvement in every way.

Finally, Scott said, “it will be nice not to see every second car the same as ours. It will be nice not to stand out in the crowd.” Perhaps he meant that standing out in the crowd for the right reasons would rest easier with his values.
