The 2025 ZEEKR X is a car that seduces you slowly, like a well-dressed stranger at a cocktail bar whispering secrets in your ear. It’s daring, luxurious, a bit quirky — and just flawed enough to make you second-guess your life choices. This is not just another Chinese EV trying to undercut the establishment; it’s a designer handbag on wheels with attitude, tech flair, and a surprisingly cheeky sense of humour.
We spent almost a fortnight with the ZEEKR X AWD, the more powerful of the two variants (there’s also a RWD), and it was nothing short of a flirtatious affair. Dressed in high-gloss paint and riding on 20-inch alloys far too posh for school pickup, it shared more than DNA with Volvo’s EX30 — it shared style, substance, and a slightly unhinged obsession with bongs.
Our first drive HERE: FIRST DRIVE: 2025 Zeekr X – Electric, Exotic, and Extra
Let’s start with the good stuff, and there’s plenty of it. The ZEEKR X boasts 315kW of power and hits 100km/h in just 3.8 seconds. That’s hot hatch territory, but this EV delivers its speed with serenity, not savagery. The dual-motor AWD setup gives you grip, poise, and a sense of confidence, while the cabin cocoons you in lush materials and Scandi-cool design.
Highlights include a massive augmented reality head-up display (AR HUD), a clever wireless phone charger mounted in the centre armrest with a rubber ‘finger’ to press your phone snugly against the coil, and a screen on the B-pillar that looks like it might beam a message to the aliens — we didn’t quite figure it out, but it added a welcome dash of whimsy. The ambient lighting was gorgeous, the powered seats cool and comfy, and even the minimalistic interior felt rich and calming — when it behaved.
On the road, the ride was soft but controlled. While others moaned about the suspension’s inability to absorb sharp bumps, we found the ZEEKR X to be civilised, cushy, and city-slick. It leaned slightly in the corners but kept its composure. The 20-inch wheels looked great, but if ZEEKR wants to improve refinement, switching to 18s with chunkier rubber or offering adaptive damping would make a world of difference.
But oh lord — the bongs.
Somewhere in the depths of its code, the ZEEKR X was possessed by the ghost of a malfunctioning microwave. Chimes, alerts, and random bings started surfacing in the final days of our review. A system that worked flawlessly for over a week suddenly refused to sign in to our profile, lost settings, and threw tantrums that reminded us of a certain other Chinese EV we’ve since banished to the “Never Again” list.
It was infuriating. You can’t sell serenity and then fill it with a cacophony of beeps, dings, and visual alerts that make no sense. It’s like trying to meditate with a jackhammer next to your ear. Over-the-air updates could fix this — and probably will — but buyers should be warned: even a Zen den can become a stress pit if the interface decides to go rogue.
And yet, we still loved it.
Why? Because the ZEEKR X feels special. It turns heads, gets attention, and makes you feel good behind the wheel. Approach it and it unlocks automatically. Walk away and it bids you farewell. Its vibe is part tech wizard, part boutique hotel. It’s luxurious without being try-hard.

With pricing now dropped by $7,000 on the RWD and $2,000 on the AWD, it suddenly looks like a bargain. Existing owners may be reaching for their gin and tonic, but buyers on the fence now have fewer reasons to hesitate — provided they can handle a little drama.
The Volvo EX30 may be winning buyers 2 to 1, possibly thanks to its more familiar brand and sharper handling, but it lacks the pizzazz that ZEEKR X brings in spades. Think of ZEEKR X as the high-maintenance partner who drives you mad but keeps you coming back for more.
Final thoughts
ZEEKR X is fabulous, feisty, and flawed. It’s an EV that delivers eye-popping acceleration, killer looks, and innovative tech, wrapped in a package that’s almost premium without being pretentious. But the user interface glitches and those dreadful bongs need to be urgently addressed if ZEEKR wants to keep Aussie drivers smiling.
We loved:
- Funky, chic design inside and out
- Scorching performance (AWD model)
- Excellent AR head-up display
- Clever details (wireless charger, ambient lighting, touchpoints)
- Smooth ride for city cruising
- Decent charging speed
- Built-in multi-camera dash cam
We loathed:
- Excessive warning chimes and system alerts
- Buggy infotainment sign-in
- 20-inch wheels that compromise ride
- Lack of physical control to mute over-speed alerts
- Slight body roll in spirited cornering
Despite its flaws, ZEEKR X left us smitten. It just needs a good therapist – or a software update – to reach true greatness.
