2024 Jeep Gladiator is already known as a decent off-roader, but the top models add a layer of luxury that makes daily driving rather fun. It has a way of making you feel rather smug, especially in traffic next to a man who has forked out a bunch of cash on a BMW that looks like as if it is trying to eat itself. You can go anywhere you want, but try  taking an M4 over anything more challenging than a speed bump at a picnic area

There are 4 models, with a few variants in-between: Sport and Sport S, Willys, Mojave and Mojave X, Rubicon and Rubicon X. Looking a little further, there are 4 – 4X4 systems:

    • Command-Trac part-time transfer case with 2.72:1 low-range ratio
    • Selec-Trac full-time transfer case with 2.72:1 low range ratio
    • Rock-Trac part-time transfer case with 4:1 low range ratio
    • Rock-Trac full-time transfer case with 4:1 low range ratio

Its trick diff and axle locks, unimpeachable approach, departure, and breakover angles, and its 11.6” ground clearance, mean it can climb mountains, if that’s your thing. A weekend at the “Cottages” would be a doddle, and, there is a ton of room for gear. It leaves the soft-roaders in its wake.

Around town, Gladiator feels big but is surprisingly easy to park, even in tight-ish spaces. We’ve reviewed Gladiator often enough to fall in love with it, just a bit. There is a decent reverse camera, as we as Blind-spot and cross-path detection and ParkSense rear park-assist system, depending on the model.

ABOVE: 2024 Jeep Gladiator Range – the reveal, and in the wild

Jeeps have had a bit of a bum rap over recent years. The brand’s reputation for reliability suffered, yet it was recently Ranked No. 1 for new vehicle quality among midsize trucks in the J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Initial Quality Study* (IQS). This says to me, that Jeep has done a good job of sorting after-sales service as well as the initial build quality. It still feels rugged, but the little luxuries are a nice touch.

The exterior has had a light touch up with a 7-slot grille, “stealth” antenna in the windscreen, and 7 new wheel designs. There are nine paint colours, including: Anvil (new), Firecracker Red, Granite Crystal, Silver Zynith, High Velocity, Hydro Blue, Sarge, Bright White and black.

The cabins have varying levels of technology and convenience.

Uconnect 5 includes:

  • 12.3-inch digital touchscreen (new)
  • Jeep Adventure Guides featuring Trails Offroad (new)
  • Five user profiles plus a valet mode – customizable music preferences, apps, seat position, mirror angles and climate comfort levels (new)
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Fully customizable home screen for quick access to frequently used features and one-touch operation (new)
  • Simultaneous connectivity for two Bluetooth-enabled phones (new)
  • Alexa Home to Car functionality to include in-vehicle Alexa virtual assistant with natural voice capability and Car to Home features
  • Uconnect mobile app
  • SiriusXM 360L platform and Personalized Stations Powered by Pandora (new)
  • TomTom navigation with predictive search, natural speak and live traffic updates
  • Maps OTA updates at the push of a button for Uconnect NAV system (new)
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot to connect up to eight wireless devices

There are 7 USB ports of which some are high-speed USB-C.

Some models have nappa leather, power seats, and a 7” digital dash and some trick rock sliders for a comfy off-road experience.

On the way to electric motoring, plenty of internal combustion engines are on the market ready to go. The big Jeep has its familiar 210kw/286Nm 3.6 Pentastar v6 petrol with either a 6-sp manual or 8-sp automatic.

There are some nifty crawl features for this big ute. Americans call it a mid-size truck, but Australians are going to consider it the full shebang.
